Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer having good transparency in the molten state or solution state, by copolymerizing a dicarboxylic acid, a low-MW glycol and a polyalkylene glycol, each of which is present in a specified amount, by use of a titanate ester. CONSTITUTION:In producing a polyester/polyether copolymer from a dicarboxylic acid component consisting mainly of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, a low- MW glycol component consisting mainly of 1,4-butanediol and a polyalkylene glycol component, MW 400-6,000, by a direct process by using a titanate ester as an esterification catalyst, the molar ratio of the low-MW glycol charged during the esterification reaction to the dicarboxylic acid charged during the esterification is not less than 1.4 and falls within the range given by the relationship, wherein A is a molar ratio of the low-MW glycol charged to the dicarboxylic acid, y is a wt% of the titanate ester (calculated as Ti) based on polymer formed and x is a wt% of the polyalkylene glycol/dicarboxylic acid repeating units in the polymer formed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the content of aldehyde compounds which are the cause of discoloration and to obtain the titled high-purity compound industrially advantegeouly, treating tetrahydrofuran prepared from a specific process for producing a polyester as a by product with an alkali metal hydroxide, followed by distillation. CONSTITUTION:In a process for producing a polyester comprising 1,4-butanediol as a main glycol component, e.g., a process for producing polybutylene terephthalate, polybutylene terephthalate.isophthalate, etc., tetrahydrofuran prepaed as a by- product is heat-treated with preferably 20-200wt% based on tetrahydrofuran alkali metal hydroxide, e.g., sodium hydroxide at from 40 deg.C- its boiling point, and distilled so that the content of aldehyde compounds based on tetrahydrofuran is reduced to not more than 200ppm, preferably not more than 120ppm. EFFECT:A useful sustance can be recovered from a distillate which was abolished before, and simultaneously problems of environmental pollution and nuisance can be dissolved.

Abstract: PURPOSE:The polymerization is conducted in the presence of a specific organotitanium compound and organotin compound to inhibit the formation of by-products and produce polytetramethylene terephthalate with less contamination by foreign substances and good haze, suitable for making fibers. CONSTITUTION:An organotitanium compound of formula I (R is alkyl; M is alkaline earth metal) such as magnesium titanium methylate is mixed with an organotin compound of formula II (R is alkyl; X1, X2, X3 are alkyl and others) such as tetraethyltin at a weight ratio of 0.7-5. The polycondensation reaction between terephthalic acid or its derivative and butanediol-1,4 is conducteed in the presence of 0.001-0.1 wt% of the mixture as a catalyst to yield the objective polymer. EFFECT:Recovered butanediol with a water content of less than 10 wt% can be eomployed as the feedstock.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled resin continuously and stably, without producing carbonized product, by polymerizing a mixture of a monovinyl aromatic monomer and an unsaturated nitrile at a specific ratio under stirring, further polymerizing the product in a plug-flow-type reactor under specific condition, and removing the volatile component. CONSTITUTION:A mixed liquid composed of 60-90% monovinyl aromatic monomer and 10-40% ethylenic unsaturated nitrile monomer is used as the polymerization stock solution, and polymerized in the first reactor forming a complete mixing state. The polymerized product is further polymerized in the plug-flow- type second reactor at 150-190 deg.C keeping the pressure in the reactor at a constant level within 1-5kg/cm G by the pressure-controlling means 7, in the presence of a solvent. The boiling point of the solvent is between -15 deg.C and +5 deg.C based on the boiling point of the monovinyl aromatic monomer, and the content of the solvent in the polymerized liquid discharged from the bottom of the reactor is controlled to a level defined by the formula[X is concentration of the solvent (%); P is pressure (kg/cm G) . The polymerized liquid is sent to the devolatilizer 11 to evaporate and remove the unreacted monomers and the solvent and obtain the molten polymer continuously.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the titled highly crystalline compsn. which has a high degree of polymn. and retains characteristics of both polymers, by subjecting a precondensate derived from terephthalic acid and 1,4-butanediol and a polyamide having a specified degree of polymn. to a polycondensation reaction, whereby a polyester and a polyamide are uniformly and finely dispersed. CONSTITUTION:The titled compsn. consists of 10-99wt% polyester composed mainly of butylene terephthalate as a principal structural unit and 1-90wt% crystalline polyamide, and has a phase separation structure where either of the both components is finely dispersed in the other component. The melting point and the crystallization temperature of this polymer compsn. correspond to those of both component, but are independent of each of those of both components. This compsn. can be obtd. by subjecting a precondensate derived from a dicarboxylic acid composed mainly of terephthalic acid or its derivative and a glycol composed mainly of 1,4-butanediol and a polyamide having a polymn. degree of 10 to a polycondensation reaction in a molten state.

Abstract: PURPOSE:A specific organotin compound is used as an esterification catalyst in the direct esterification process to keep the high catalyst activity and prevent the formation of foreign substance during the continuous production of polyester. CONSTITUTION:In the esterification between dicarboxylic acids such as terephthalic acid and glycols, a glycol slurry of an organotin compound of the formula (R is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl) such as butyltin hydroxyoxide preferably the slurry concentration is 0.1-30wt%, is added as an esterification catalyst. The preferred amount to be added is 0.005-0.2mol% based on the dicarboxylic acid component.
