Abstract: The invention is concerned with a method of preparing polybromoacenaphtene and its condensate which are useful intermediates in the preparation of polybromoacenaphthylene and its condensate possessing excellent flame retardant properties. The method of the invention comprises reacting an acenaphthene derivative or its condensate with bromine in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, by feeding a solution of the acenaphthene derivative or its condensate and bromine simultaneously at a predetermined rate into a reactor containing a halogenated hydrocarbon and an iron catalyst.

Abstract: A process for recovering brominated acenaphthylene and its condensate in the form of powder, comprising dropping a solution of brominated acenaphthylene and its condensate produced from acenaphthene by reactions of bromination, condensation and dehydrobromination into hot water containing a carboxylic acid ester of polyoxyalkylene sorbitan, while the solvent is being distilled off, to recover the brominated acenaphthylene and its condensate in the form of powder dispersed in water. The invention provides an economically profitable industrial process for producing brominated acenaphthylene and its condensates, in which the safety in operation is enhanced by keeping workers away frome exposure to organic solvents and avoiding inflammation and explosion of inflammable organic solvents.
