Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for ionizing molecules for the purpose of analysis by mass spectrometry, in which gaseous material from a sample substrate is generated using laser desorption. The laser is provided having a pulse range of about 1-1000 picoseconds to produce the gaseous material. The gaseous material is heated to generate ions from the molecules present in the gaseous material where the amount of heat that is applied is in the temperature range of 45 °C to 250 °C and the applied heat results in soft ionization of the molecules. The ionized molecules are transported to a mass spectrometer for analysis.

Abstract: Various embodiments are described herein for a system and a method for obtaining samples of tissue for analysis by mass spectrometry. A region of interest can be identified in tissue using image data from a first imaging modality that is other than mass spectrometry. At least one tissue sample can be acquired using a tissue sampler from a sampling location related to the region of interest. Mass spectrum data can be generated for the acquired tissue samples using a mass spectrometer. In some embodiments, polarimetry may be used on a tissue slice, mass spectrometry may be performed on the same tissue slice and then H&E imaging may be performed on the same tissue slice.

Abstract: Various embodiments are described herein for a system and a method for identifying a region of interest in tissue using mass spectrometry. An agent administration component can be provided to administer an exogenous agent to the tissue. A sampling unit can also be provided to acquire a sample from the tissue. The sample can then be provided to a high sensitivity analysis platform, such as a mass analyzer, to analyze the sample and determine a distribution of the exogenous agent or a by-product of the exogenous agent within the tissue based on the analysis. The analysis platform can then identify the region of interest based on the distribution of the exogenous agent or the distribution of the by-product.
