Abstract: A high pressure mercury lamp with an extremely high mercury vapor pressure and extremely high wall load in which the arc during operation is advantageously stabilized is achieved in a high pressure mercury lamp having a discharge vessel of fused silica glass which contains a pair of opposed tungsten electrodes, mercury in an amount at least equal to 0.16 mg/mm and a rare gas, and in which the discharge tube has a wall load at least equal to 0.8 W/mm , by at least one metal halide with a metal having an ionization potential that is at most 0.87 times as high as the mercury ionization potential being added to the discharge tube in a range of from 2 x 10 to 7 x 10 mu mole/mm .

Abstract: A metal halogen lamp has a cathode (11) and anode (12) in the discharge chamber of a quartz glass tube (10), separated by less than 2.9 mm. The tube is filled with mercury and a metallic halide. The ratio of the maximum inner diameter to the extent of the cathode from the wall of the discharge chamber is about 1.9. The discharge chamber is ellipsoidal and the centre of the arc is displaced from the geometric centre of the chamber. The tip of the anode is also displaced from this geometric centre. The rated power of the DC supply for the lamp is between 100 and 400 watts. The lamp is used in liquid crystal projectors.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent crack of a discharge container by arranging long-sized conductive metal foil in at least one of sealing portions, forming airtight seal portions at two positions mutually separated in the length direction, and forming an airtight space between these two airtight seal portions. SOLUTION: A long-sized conductive metal foil 20A is arranged in a sealing portion 13. One end of the long-sized conductive metal foil 20A is welded and electrically connected to a base end of a tungsten-made electrode bar 16 having a positive electrode 15 at its tip, and the other end is welded and electrically connected to a base end of an external lead bar 21. Shrink seal or pinch seal, for example, forms an inner-side airtight seal portion 13A and an outer-side airtight seal portion 13B, at two positions mutually separated in the length direction of the conductive metal foil 20A, and an airtight space 25 is formed between the airtight seal portions 13A, 13B at the two positions in a state such that the conductive metal foil 20A passes. The airtight space 25 is preferably filled with nitrogen gas as inert gas.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a high pressure discharge lamp that can fill precisely halogen of an objective quantity and can suppress entering of impurities that give bad effect to the lighting condition obtained of the high pressure discharge lamp, and a high pressure discharge lamp that can maintain good lighting condition for a long time. SOLUTION: This is a manufacturing method of a high pressure discharge lamp in which the airtight sealing part is formed of a discharge electrode assembly constructed of a metal foil and a lead rod at the sealing tube part of the discharge container in which the sealing tube part is connected to the light- emitting tube part and halogen is filled in the light-emitting tube part. The method comprises a process in which halogen introducing gas made of halogenated hydrogen is introduced in the discharge-container forming tube at one end of which one of the airtight sealing parts is formed and, by cooling a part of the discharge-container forming tube, the halogen introducing gas is liquidized and, in that state, the other airtight sealing part is formed at the other end of the discharge-container forming tube.
