    Abstract: A device for operating a discharge lamp of the short arc type having a feed device which supplies a direct current to the discharge lamp when operation starts and an alternating current afterwards, in which the feed device supplies a direct current which is smaller than the rated current to the discharge lamp at the start of operation, and a direct current which is at least as large as the rated current, afterwards. A control which ascertains whether the discharge lamp at the start of operation is in a hot or cold start operating state, and which establishes one of the following parameters based on whether the hot or cold operating state ascertained to exist: the value of the direct current which is at least as great as the rated current; the feed duration of the direct current which is at least as great as the rated current.

    Abstract: A lamp package (10, 30) includes a sealing member consisting of a functionally gradient material, and a lead rod (13, 32) bonded to the sealing member (11, 31), which is a laminate of insulating inorganic substance layers and a plurality of compound layers consisting of a conductive inorganic component and an insulating inorganic component. In the sealing member, the proportion of the conductive organic component increases in the direction of lamination and a hole is formed extending in the same direction to receive the lead rod. A sleeve made of refractory metal is inserted integrally between the hole and the lead rod. The package made of the functionally gradient material forms a hermetic enclosure of a lamp.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp having high durability of an airtight property in an airtight seal part and capable of providing a long use life. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp is provided with a discharge vessel formed of silica glass and having an arc tube part and sealed parts. The discharge lamp is characterized in that the airtight seal parts are formed by embedding metal foil pieces in the seal parts of the discharge vessel, and on at least one surface of each metal foil piece, a coating film comprising at least one kind of metal oxide selected from titanium oxide, lanthanum oxide and tantalum oxide, zirconium oxide containing yttrium oxide, and hafnium oxide containing yttrium oxide is formed. The metal oxide forming the coating film is preferably crystalline. The coating film is preferably formed by interlaying a lower layer film formed of aluminum oxide or yttrium oxide.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a high pressure discharge lamp that can fill precisely halogen of an objective quantity and can suppress entering of impurities that give bad effect to the lighting condition obtained of the high pressure discharge lamp, and a high pressure discharge lamp that can maintain good lighting condition for a long time. SOLUTION: This is a manufacturing method of a high pressure discharge lamp in which the airtight sealing part is formed of a discharge electrode assembly constructed of a metal foil and a lead rod at the sealing tube part of the discharge container in which the sealing tube part is connected to the light- emitting tube part and halogen is filled in the light-emitting tube part. The method comprises a process in which halogen introducing gas made of halogenated hydrogen is introduced in the discharge-container forming tube at one end of which one of the airtight sealing parts is formed and, by cooling a part of the discharge-container forming tube, the halogen introducing gas is liquidized and, in that state, the other airtight sealing part is formed at the other end of the discharge-container forming tube.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent crack generation on a sealing member and to obtain sufficient thermal durability, by sticking a lead rod integrally in the state of a sleeve-shaped metal member comprising a high melting-point metal interposed between the circumferential face of the lead rod inserted into a hole of the sealing member and the hole of the sealing member. The base end side part 21 of an electrode 13, where a discharge electrode 12 is formed, is inserted into an electrode inserting hole of the sealing member 11, and stuck integrally in the state where a sleeve-shaped metal member 14 comprising a high melting-point metal is interposed between the circumferential face of the base end side part 21 of the electrode 13 and the inner face of the electrode inserting hole of the sealing member 11.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp that can have a sufficiently large pressure-proofing strength at welded portions between quartz glass and molybdenum foil that form sealing parts of the discharge vessel to prevent its destruction and gives a high working pressure of the lamp. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp is equipped with a discharge vessel made of quartz glass that has a luminous tube part and a sealed part connected thereto. An electrode bar with an electrode disposed within the luminous tube at the tip is joined to an end, and together, molybdenum foil joined with an external lead bar at the other end has been sealed at the seal part of the discharge vessel. Surface of the molybdenum foil has been welded to the quartz glass that forms the seal portion in the state of interposing a layer coated with an oxide.
