Abstract: A method of inserting a tool string into a wellbore includes inserting a tool string into an upper portion of a wellbore. The upper portion has a casing string. The casing string has a first downhole deployment valve (DDV) and a second DDV. Each DDV includes a valve member. The first valve member is closed and isolates the upper portion from a lower portion of the wellbore. The lower portion is adjacent a hydrocarbon bearing formation and is pressurized by the formation. The second valve member is redundant. The method further includes pressurizing the upper portion; opening the first valve member; and advancing the tool string into the lower portion of the wellbore.

Abstract: A downhole deployment valve (DDV) system (100) comprises tubular string in a wellbore (104), and object stopping assembly (108) for stopping an object (106) falling toward the valve member (102) prior to the object contacting the valve member. Any combination of valve protection features may be used with or incorporated into the DDV such as redundant valve members (figure 5), an upward opening flapper valve or a metering flapper below a sealing valve. In one aspect, a barrier (101) or diverter (301, figures 3 and 4) located in the bore above a valve member of the DDV permits passage through the bore (104) when the valve member is open and actuates when the valve member is closed. Once actuated, the barrier or diverter either stops or diverts any dropped objects prior to the dropped object reaching and potentially damaging the valve member. In another aspect (figures 6 and 7), the tool string tripped in above the DDV includes an acceleration actuated brake (601, figures 6 and 7) that anchors the tool string to a surrounding tubular if the tool string is dropped.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for utilizing a downhole deployment valve (DDV) t o isolate a pressure in a portion of a bore are disclosed. Any combination of fail safe features may be used with or incorporated into the DDV such as redundant val ve members, an upward opening flapper valve or a metering flapper below a seali ng valve. In one aspect, a barrier or diverter located in the bore above a valv e member of the DDV permits passage through the bore when the valve member is open an d actuates when the valve member is closed. Once actuated, the barrier or diverter either stops or diverts any dropped objects prior to the dropped object reaching and potentially damaging the valve member. In another aspect, the tool string tripped in above the DDV includes an acceleration actuated brake that anchors the tool string to a surrounding tubular if the tool string is dropped.

Abstract: A method for drilling a wellbore comprises circulating a foam F through a tubular body and into the annulus between the tubular body and the wellbore 203, and maintaining a substantially homogenous foam flow regime F using one or more pressure control mechanisms. The control mechanism may be a choke 265, separator, gas injector, downhole lifting device, pump or other Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD) tool. The foam F may be a foamed cement. The homogenous foam flow regime may be maintained by altering foam quality, foam viscosity or foam shear strength.
