Abstract: A method for printing a three-dimensional tissue scaffold comprises printing a first layer of scaffold fibres 135 with a printer onto a base gel substrate 110 and disposing a first gel layer over the first printed layer. The method may further comprise printing a second layer of scaffold fibres over the first gel layer and further disposing a second gel layer over the second printed layer. The scaffold fibres may comprise contiguous droplets of biodegradable polymer 160 wherein the method may further comprise ejecting a plurality of droplets of a solution of a biodegradable polymer from a printer nozzle 150 to form at least one scaffold fibre during printing of the first layer. The base gel layer may comprise a gel layer disposed over a porous substrate 100 and may comprise hydrogels, naturally-derived degradable polymers and synthetic degradable polymers. Disclosed hydrogels include those formed of Matrigel (RTM), Geltrex (RTM), poly(ethylene oxide), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(acrylic acid), agarose, alginate, chitosan, collagen, fibrin, gelatine, hyaluronic acid. Disclosed synthetic polymers include poly(glycolic acid), poly(lactic acid), poly(ε-caprolactone), polyurethanes, poly(ortho esters) poly(anhydrides_ poly(vinyl alcohol). The method may include printing a first and second sacrificial scaffold fibre and printing the first scaffold fibre between said sacrificial fibres.

Abstract: A system and method for delivering molten ink to a printing mechanism or print head includes; receiving molten ink in a receiving reservoir 18, and alternating which of a plurality of reservoirs is opened to the receiving reservoir to receive molten ink while at least one other of the plurality of reservoirs is opened to dispense molten ink to the printing mechanism. The plurality of reservoirs may comprise a first reservoir 20 and second reservoir 22.The opening of the reservoirs may be alternated in response to the level of ink detected within the reservoirs. The first and second reservoirs may receive ink via inlets 32 and dispense ink via outlets 36. Valve assemblies may be disposed between the inlets and outlets and may comprise a seal member 70 movable between inlet and outlet positions.

Abstract: A maintenance system and method for maintaining an imaging member of an imaging device includes a pre-cleaning device to clean the imaging member; an applicator to apply release agent to the imaging member; a metering device to meter release agent on the imaging member; a reservoir to remotely store release agent; and a pump to supply the applicator with release agent from the reservoir. The saturation level of the applicator is monitored and maintained within a predetermined range. The applicator, pre-cleaning device and metering device may be independently actuated to engage the imaging member. Release agent collected by the pre-cleaning device and/or metering device may be recycled. Debris collected by the pre-cleaning device and/or metering device may be stored and/or removed.

Abstract: A high shear ball check valve device is provided and is suitable for use in a liquid ink image producing machine to quickly and precisely control flow of liquid ink. The high shear ball check valve device includes a valve housing defining a valve chamber. The valve chamber has a desired cross-dimension, an inlet end, and an outlet end. The high shear ball check valve device also includes an inlet member that is connected to the inlet end of the valve housing and has an inlet opening and a ball seat and seal portion surrounding the inlet opening. The ball seat and seal portion has a desired first durometer hardness value. The high shear ball check valve device next includes a valve ball having a desired diameter and being located movably within the valve chamber, and an outlet opening located at the outlet end of the valve chamber. The outlet opening has a rectangular shape, and a size that is slightly greater than the diameter of the valve ball, for creating a backward fluid flow pattern that results in relatively high shear stress on the valve ball. The relatively high shear stress thereby quickly moves the valve ball away from the outlet opening and back against the ball seat and seal portion to shut off the inlet opening.

Abstract: An ink umbilical provides different colors of heated ink to multiple print heads in an integrated structure. The ink umbilical includes a first plurality of conduits, each conduit in the first plurality having a first end and a second end, a second plurality of conduits, each conduit in the second plurality having a first end and a second end, and a heater having a first side and a second side, the first plurality of conduits being coupled to the first side of the heater and the second plurality of conduits being coupled to the second side of the heater so the heater generates heat for ink being carried between the first and the second ends of the first plurality and the second plurality of conduits.
