Abstract: A print media sheets trailing edge knockdown stacking assistance system (100,52,14), in a compiler or other stacking system with a substantial sheet gravity drop, activated for each ejected sheet (12) to move substantially linearly and perpendicularly downwardly from above, but adjacent to, the sheet ejection position to engage a sheet end area and rapidly push it down towards the underlying stack of sheets (18) and into engagement with any sheet compiling device, then automatically rapidly reciprocally lifting up out of the way above the sheet ejection position before another sheet is ejected, without any significant pause between its up and down movements.

Abstract: Certain designs of paper feeding devices used in copiers and printers require that an edge of a stack of sheets be in close contact with a slanted surface. An apparatus engages an opposite edge of the stack to urge the stac k against the slanted surface, so that the stack assumes a parallelogram shape . The apparatus includes a plate which is movable from a vertical, upright position to a slanted position. Means are provided to cause the plate to move to the slanted position in response to the closing of a paper bray of a printer or copier.

Abstract: In known fully active retard feeders initial feeding may be poor due to contamination build-up and/or roll "set" when left in position overnight and this may lead to skipped pitches and/or misfeeds during initial feeding. To address this a method for improving the performance in fully active retard feeders includes driving a feed or separation roll 52 and retard roll 53 pair of a sheet feeder backwards prior to feeding sheets S1, S2. The rolls 52, 53 may be driven in a reverse feed direction periodically during idle periods and as part of a warm-up cycle. The reverse driving may increase the temperature of the rolls 52, 53, thereby increasing their coefficient of friction. The reverse driving may also clean surface debris from the rolls 52, 53 and/or allow flat spots on the rolls 52, 53 to relax. The rolls 52, 53 may be driven counterclockwise during reverse feeding. The sheet feeder may form part of reprographic apparatus or a xerographic device.
