    Abstract: A web-steering mechanism, particularly for the endless belt of a xerographic copier, uses two rolls to hold the belt under tension. An idler roll is designed to rotate about an axis which is at a small angle to a tilt axis of the idler roll assembly. Small tilting movements of the idler roll assembly, under the control of a servo-motor are effective to alter the angle at which the web enters and/or leaves the roll, to cause the web to walk along the tilted roll.

    Abstract: Mechanism designed to centre a travelling web or endless belt along an idler roll around which the web or belt is entrained includes an internal shaft (12) on which the idler roll 2 is mounted for relative rotation, the shaft (12) having a tilt axis which intersects the rotary axis of the roll at or near its centre, Fig 2. When applied to the endless belt of a photocopier, the loosely held belt in a detachable housing is brought into proximity with the cantilevered pair of idler roll 2 and fixed drive roll 4 projecting from the copier; idler roll 2 is biassed by spring 38 to tension the belt; then under the control of photodetectors (not shown), shaft (12) is rotated incrementally by motor 26 to walk the belt along the roll 2. Once its intended position has been reached, the tilt is removed to restore parallelism between the roll axes.

    Abstract: An electrostatographic copier has a transfer zone at which a toner image is transferred from a moving member, e.g. belt (3) to a copy sheet, and a cleaner blade (5) for removing residual toner from the belt after image transfer. A trap (25) is provided to collect paper fibres and other debris from the belt after the transfer zone and before reaching the blade (5). This debris would otherwise impair the ability of the blade to remove toner. The trap (25) comprises a strip-shaped pad (26) of compliant material such as polyurethane preferably faced with velour which is arranged to brush lightly against the belt (3). The trap (25) may be included in a cassette (1) incorporating the belt and other process means (4, 6) and adapted to be removably mounted in the main assembly of the copier.

    Abstract: Apparatus for separating residual toner material from the surface of a reusable photoreceptor (3) in a reproducing machine has a cleaner blade assembly (1) comprising a cleaner blade (5) in a holder (6). The cleaner blade assembly is movable between two positions. In a first position (see Fig. 2) the blade (5) operatively engages the photoreceptor to clean off the residual toner material which is then collected in a generally enclosed chamber (16) below. In the second position (see Fig. 3) the blade assembly is spaced apart from the photoreceptor but covers the entrance to the chamber forming a sealed enclosure for the contents. Thus the toner collecting chamber is sealed by the cleaner blade alone without relying on the photoreceptor to perform a sealing function which makes the apparatus particularly suitable for use in a process cassette comprising at least a photoreceptor and, optionally, other process elements wherein the photoreceptor cannot seal the chamber because it is only loosely retained when the cassette is not in the working position in the machine.

    Abstract: Cleaning apparatus for a xerographic copying machine, for cleaning residual toner particles from the moving surface of a photoreceptor drum (1), comprises a housing (33), a generally downwardly pointing doctor blade (34) within the housing arranged in a cleaning engagement with the drum surface at a position where the surface is moving generally upwardly, and an auger (35) in the housing below the doctor blade for collecting cleaned off particles. A deflector member (101) in the form of an elongate brush is mounted below the doctor blade (34) and has a row of generally upwardly pointing bristles (103) which contact a line on the drum surface below the line of contact between the surface and the doctor blade whereby cleaned off toner particles are deflected by the deflector member away from the surface and into the auger. The deflector member (101) comprises a rigid support strip to which the bases of the brush bristles (103) are secured, and a resilient backing strip for the bristles, the backing strip being secured to the support strip on the side of the bristles remote from the drum surface, and providing resilient support for the bristles over part of their length.
