Abstract: An access device for accessing an intervertebral disc having an outer shield comprising an access shield with a larger diameter (~16-30 mm) that reaches from the skin down to the facet line, with an inner shield having a second smaller diameter (~5-12mm) extending past the access shield and reaches down to the disc level. This combines the benefits of the direct visual microsurgical/mini open approaches and the percutaneous, "ultra-MIS" techniques.

Abstract: A registration system includes a probe and an implant. The probe has a body, a tip including an apex with a central axis therethrough, and an outer surface extending away from the apex. The implant is connectable to a bone and has an exterior surface with a plurality of registration features thereon. Each of the registration features has an apex with a central axis therethrough, and an inner surface extending about the apex. The registration system is compatible with a surgical navigation system such that a location of the apex of the probe tip within an intraoperative coordinate space is detected by a localizer of the navigation system and communicated to a processor of the navigation system. Further, when the probe tip is fully received in any one of the registration features, the apices of the respective probe tip and registration feature are coincident.
