Abstract: According to one or more embodiments, a plate grid distributor for distributing a fluid in a vessel or a plenum for removing a fluid from a vessel may include a plate and a skirt. The skirt may be in direct contact with the plate and may include a first portion and a second portion. The first portion may be in direct contact with the plate and the second portion may be in direct contact with the first portion. The first portion may have a first allowable stress and the second portion may have a second allowable stress. According to one or more other embodiments, a method of distributing a fluid through a plate grid distributor in a vessel may include passing the fluid into the vessel and directing the fluid through the plate grid distributor.

Abstract: Some variations provide a system for producing a functionalized powder, comprising: an agitated pressure vessel; first particles and second particles contained within the agitated pressure vessel; a fluid contained within the agitated pressure vessel; an exhaust line for releasing the fluid from the agitated pressure vessel; and a means for recovering a functionalized powder containing the second particles disposed onto surfaces of the first particles. A preferred fluid is carbon dioxide in liquefied or supercritical form. The carbon dioxide may be initially loaded into the pressure vessel as solid carbon dioxide. The pressure vessel may be batch or continuous and is operated under reaction conditions to functionalize the first particles with the second particles, thereby producing a functionalized powder, such as nanofunctionalized metal particles in which nanoparticles act as grain refiners for a component ultimately produced from the nanofunctionalized metal particles. Methods for making the functionalized powder are also disclosed.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method of performing a chemical reaction under elevated pressure. It is suggested that the method comprises the steps of pressurizing a first vessel (3) and a second vessel (5) with reactant-containing liquid and gas to a predetermined pressure, providing reaction conditions in one of the vessels (3, 5) such that the chemical reaction is effected and a product-containing liquid is obtained, withdrawing liquid from the respective vessel (3, 5) as reaction product when a predetermined amount of reaction product has formed, preferably after the chemical reaction in the respective vessel (3, 5) has concluded, and synchronously supplying reactant-containing liquid to the respective other vessel (3, 5), wherein the first and second vessels (3, 5) are in fluid communication by way of a gas communication passage (27). The invention also relates to an apparatus and use thereof for performing said chemical reaction.

Abstract: The invention relates to a reactor 1 for supercritical hydrothermal gasification of aqueous multicomponent mixtures in the absence of oxygen. It is also an object of the invention to provide a system for operating the reactor 1, a method for operating the reactor 1, and the use of the reactor 1. The reactor 1 according to the invention is compatible with many existing systems, is compact, can be provided on a turnkey basis, and can be manufactured and operated at low cost. The reactor 1 according to the invention thus enables, for the first time, a diverse commercial use of hydrothermal gasification of biomass, sewage sludge and other organic wastes in supercritical water.
