Abstract: A windshield of a vehicle includes a reflective polarizer. The windshield is configured to receive and reflect an image light emitted by a display toward a passenger of the vehicle, such that for a substantially normally incident light, the windshield has first and second reflection spectra versus wavelength for the incident light polarized along respective first and second directions. The first reflection spectrum includes a plurality of reflection bands. Each of the reflection bands has a maximum reflectance R1max between 20% and 80%. Between each pair of adjacent reflection bands in the plurality of reflection bands, the first reflection spectrum has a minimum reflectance R1min between 5% and 25%. In the visible wavelength range, the second reflection spectrum has a maximum reflectance R2max and a minimum reflectance R2min, such that R2max and R2min are within 15% of each other.

Abstract: A display system includes a display panel configured to emit a polarized image light having a first polarization state and at least one emission spectrum having a full width at half maxima (FWHM). The display system includes a reflective polarizer configured to receive and reflect the polarized image light as a first reflected polarized image light. For a first light incident at a first predetermined angle, the reflective polarizer has an average reflectance of greater than about 60% across the at least one emission spectrum for the first polarization state, a transmittance of at least about 50% for at least wavelength outside the FWHM of the at least one emission spectrum for the first polarization state, and an average total transmittance of greater than about 70% across a visible wavelength range including the FWHM of the at least one emission spectrum for an orthogonal second polarization state.

Abstract: An optical stack includes a reflective polarizer, an absorbing polarizer, and a half-wave retarder. The half-wave retarder is disposed between the reflective and absorbing polarizers. For substantially normally incident light and a first polarization state, the reflective polarizer reflects at least about 60% of the incident light for at least a first wavelength less than a cut-off wavelength and transmits at least about 50% of the incident light for at least a second wavelength greater than the cut-off wavelength. For substantially normally incident light, the half-wave retarder has a first retardance of less than about 250 nanometers (nm) at the first wavelength and a second retardance at the second wavelength. A deviation of the first retardance from a first half-wave retardance corresponding to the first wavelength is less than a deviation of the second retardance from a second half-wave retardance corresponding to the second wavelength.

Abstract: An optical system for displaying a virtual image to a viewer includes stacked integral first reflective polarizer and integral second reflective polarizer, a display, and a mirror. For substantially normally incident light: for at least one visible wavelength in a first wavelength range, the first reflective polarizer reflects at least 60% of the incident light having a first polarization state and transmits at least 60% of the incident light having an orthogonal second polarization state, and the second reflective polarizer transmits at least 60% of the incident light for each of the first and second polarization states; and for at least one infrared wavelength in a second wavelength range, the first reflective polarizer reflects at least 60% of the incident light having the first polarization state and transmits at least 60% of the incident light having the second polarization state, and the second reflective polarizer reflects at least 60% of the incident light having the second polarization state and transmits at least 20% of the light having the first polarization state.

Abstract: A reflective polarizer is such that for substantially normally incident light and for blue, green and red wavelengths, the reflective polarizer: has a transmission spectrum including a blue transmission stop band for the incident light polarized along a first direction; reflects at least about 50% of the incident light polarized along the first direction for the blue wavelength; transmits at least about 50% of the incident light polarized along an orthogonal second direction for each of the blue, green and red wavelengths; and transmits between about 50% and about 95% of the incident light polarized along the first direction for each of the green and red wavelengths. The blue transmission stop band has opposing first and second band edges having respective first and second slope magnitudes S1 and S2, where S1/S2≥2. A display system includes the reflective polarizer disposed on a display panel.

Abstract: A display system includes a display panel including a plurality light emitting pixels and a reflective polarizer disposed on the light emitting pixels. The reflective polarizer can have a reflection band having a lower overlap with an emission spectrum of red light emitting pixels for substantially normally incident light and a higher overlap with the emission spectrum of the red light emitting pixels for at least one incident angle greater than about 40 degrees. The reflective polarizer can have a reflection band overlapping an emission spectrum of blue light emitting pixels for substantially normally incident light.
