A process for color matching a metallic paint by taking a color measurement reading at a single angle using a regular spectrophotometer or colorimeter is provided. The preferred type of metallic pigment to be utilized in preparing the matching color can be selected by microscopic evaluation of the metallic pigment in the target metallic paint to identify its size, shape and probable composition.
Abstract:
An apparatus for measuring a spatially under-sampled Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) of a surface. The apparatus may comprise a first light source directed to illuminate the surface from a first illumination direction, and a plurality of sensors positioned to receive light reflected by the surface. The plurality of sensors may comprise first, second and third sensors positioned to receive light reflected by the surface in first, second and third non-coplanar directions. In various embodiments, the apparatus may also comprise a computer in communication with the plurality of sensors. The computer is configured to convert light sensed by the plurality of sensors into a first appearance property of the surface considering the first, second, and third reflectance directions.

The invention relates to a device for measuring color, luster and undulations on lacquered freeform surfaces at a predetermined target distance and symmetrically in relation to the measuring point normal lines at a measuring point. Said device is characterized by the provision of a measuring head that can be displaced in three dimensions by at least one motor and that comprises a measuring-head axis, a light emitter and a video camera. The light emitter is provided with a planar light pattern that is to be emitted along its illumination axis. An evaluation unit is provided for the light pattern (reproduction pattern) of the light emitter that is reproduced in the video camera, said evaluation unit emitting a control signal which is dependent on and formed from the distortion produced or the migration of the reproduction pattern. The measuring head is provided with a motor control, to whose input the control signal of the evaluation unit is applied and the measuring head is displaced in order to reduce the distortion or the migration of the reproduction pattern in the video camera to below a predetermined value, in such a way that both the measuring head axis coincides with the measuring point normal lines and the vertex of the angle formed by the illumination axis of the light emitter and the optical axis of the video camera coincides with the measuring point.

In a multi-angle calorimeter having an illumination system that illuminates a sample surface and a plurality of light receiving systems that receive reflected light therefrom, an illumination system for orientation error detection is provided that illuminates the sample surface from substantially close direction to the normal of the sample surface. Actual measured reflectance factor is corrected based on the specific approximation function obtained from the measured reflectance factor and detected orientation error.

In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, a goniospectrophotometer is provided for quickly obtaining a goniospectrum using a goniospectrophotometer. In some embodiments, a parabolic reflector is used to optically transform the angular space of a source at the parabola focus into a linear space and facilitate the use of a single diffracting element and area camera to simultaneously measure the angular spectrum of the source. Spectra corresponding to zenith angles of light reflection by the parabolic reflector can be acquired by a detector and analyzed in a computer.

Method, system and computer product for formulating a bi-directional color match. In this disclosure, a computing unit obtains spectral measurements of a target bi-directional color. The computing unit uses a bi-directional color formulation tool determine a combination of pigments, dyes and platelet-shaped pigments that generates spectral measurements that match the spectral measurements of the target bi-directional color.

A method for mobile on- and off-line monitoring of coloured and high-gloss automobile component surfaces includes a camera-supported optical scanning of the automobile surface by means of an angle-dependent spectrophotometer, connected to and initialising an optical neuro-fuzzy structured image data bank, which permits a preparation of the measured signal coming from the detector by means of a computer-aided optical quality data bank and allows an evaluation of the measured automobile surfaces. The data link occurs via a neuronal network to a control unit for surface measurement systems, connected to a production planning system, a customer information system and the product unit for automobile painting/coating.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for color matching are provided, in which paint recipe neural networks are utilized. The color of a standard is expressed as color values. The neural network includes an input layer having nodes for receiving input data related to paint bases. Weighted connections connect to the nodes of the input layer and have coefficients for weighting the input data. An output layer having nodes are either directly or indirectly connected to the weighted connections and generates output data related to color values. The data to the input layer and the data from the output layer are interrelated through the neural network's nonlinear relationship. The paint color matching neural network can be used for, but not limited to, color formula correction, matching from scratch, effect pigment identification, selection of targets for color tools, searching existing formulas for the closest match, identification of formula mistakes, development of color tolerances and enhancing conversion routines.
Abstract:
A method for generating a calculation formula to obtain an accurate mottling value is disclosed. Two-dimensional data and color values of a target paint film are considered. The calculation formula provides a method for numerically expressing the mottling of the target paint film.

Metallic paint colors are classified and arranged by determining the representative color of any metallic paint color; calculating the hue-tone value of said representative color; generating coating color computer graphics indicating optical properties of said metallic paint color in a prescribed range of angles of observation; and preparing a coating color map by arranging said coating color computer graphics over the hue-tone value of said representative color in a hue-tone chart on the monitor screen of a computer system.
