Abstract: This invention is directed to an x-ray source comprising a power supply, a flexible fiber optic cable assembly, a light source, and a target assembly. The power supply includes a first terminal and a second terminal, and elements for establishing an output voltage between the first terminal and the second terminal. The flexible fiber optical cable assembly has an originating end and a terminating end, and includes a fiber optical element extending from the originating end to the terminating end. The cable is adapted for transmitting light incident on the originating end to the terminating end. The light source includes elements for generating a beam of light at and directed to the originating end of the fiber optical cable assembly. The target assembly is affixed to the terminating end of the fiber optical cable assembly and is electrically coupled to the power supply by way of the first terminal and the second terminal. The target assembly includes elements for emitting x-rays in a predetermined spectral range, in response to light transmitted to the terminating end.

Abstract: An X-ray tube for greatly enhancing the output of photons relative to a standard tube includes a source of an electron beam focused on a target at an angle of approximately 10.degree. to produce high energy photons emitted at an angle along their centerline of 5.degree. to 15.degree., both angles referring to the surface of the target. Reduction of impurgement of scattered electrons on the tube window is affected in various ways such as use of a magnet to deflect electrons from the photon stream or locating the window out of alignment with the most intense scattered electrons. Scattered electrons are also absorbed by an essentially zero albedo shield disposed in the path of the majority of the scattered electrons not directed at the window.

Abstract: An x-ray tube contains a plurality of filaments each with an associated focus cup control to allow it to change rapidly between discrete emission intensities. The cathode structure of the x-ray tube is constructed so that each filament is located in a separate focus cup structure. However, the focus cup structures are electrically isolated so that a separate bias potential can be applied to each focus cup structure. By separately biasing each focus cup structure, the emission from each of the filaments can be controlled independently.

The composite target cone is multi-layered, having at least an X-ray generating layer formed of platinum, silver, palladium, rhodium, molybdenum, tungsten, silicon, aluminum or copper, and a water-interface layer. The water-interface layer includes a layer of high thermal conductivity material, covered at one side by a layer of high corrosion resistance material and at the other side by a layer of high-melting point material.

Abstract: Disclosed is a reusable microfocus X-ray tube adapted to generate a relatively large number of X-rays in a relatively short period of time using a narrowly focused electron beam. The X-ray tube comprises means for producing a dense, narrow electron beam, a target anode, and means for causing relative movement of the electron beam and the target anode such that the electron beam and the target anode are stationary relative to each other during production of the X-rays but a fresh portion of the surface of the target anode is presented to the electron beam each time the X-ray tube is used. The X-ray tube includes (a) means for collecting charged particles boiled off the target anode by the electron beam, (b) means for increasing the quantity of electricity delivered to the heater cathode, (c) means for counting the number of times the X-ray tube is used, and (d) means for generating a signal when the X-ray tube has been used a first predetermined number of times.

Abstract: In an electron accelerator having a target which is exposed to an electron beam for the production of x-ray deceleration radiation, a conical compensating member is arranged centrally within a cone pattern of the x-ray radiation. The compensating member has a decreasing conical shape toward the target and merges into a cylinder portion. Beam paths within the cylinder portion which are additional to those in a conventional purely conical compensating member are compensated by a recess positioned in a base of the compensating member having an appropriately selected depth. In another embodiment, a conically shaped compensating member is arranged within the cone-shaped x-ray pattern such that a tip of the compensating member is aligned away from the target and a base is aligned toward the target. A collimator having a conical passageway surrounding the x-ray radiation has a groove for receiving the base of the compensating member so as to mount the same within the conical passageway of the collimator.

Abstract: An extended radiating aperture for X-rays is provided by means of a stationary target of a heavy metal positioned for uniform illumination by high speed electrons emanating from a cathode and accelerating through a difference of potential between the cathode and the target. The target is in the form of a relatively thin film which can be deposited on a substrate transparent to Xradiation. A layer of fluorescent material is placed adjacent the substrate on the opposite side thereof from the target so that Xrays generated within the target material pass through the target material and impinge on the fluorescent layer. The fluorescent material enhances the monochromaticity of the X-ray spectrum by emitting fluorescent X-radiation while substantially absorbing incident X-radiation having energies above the fluorescent radiation spectrum. A zone plate is positioned adjacent the fluorescent layer to spatially modulate the radiation of the radiating aperture to provide this radiation with a spatial frequency spectrum suitable for obtaining high resolution roentgenograms. The zone plate provides a coding on the roentgenogram which is then decoded by an optical processor to form a visible image of an object being X-rayed. Alternative embodiments of the invention include the use of an inclined transmissive target, a transmissive target having serrations, and the use of a moire pattern mask between the target and the fluorescent material to augment fluorescent radiation from the target and to inhibit the passage of X-radiation normal to the layer of fluorescent material.
