    Abstract: Counterbalancing mechanism for a garage door or other device in which a torsion spring end member is fastened to a second member to which it is connected during normal operation of the counterbalance by cooperating interfitting elements on the members which allow longitudinal movement of the end of the spring during a spring adjusting operation. The counterbalance hardware includes a self-locking winding mechanism for winding or unwinding one or more torsion springs which operates to fix one end of the spring connected thereto against movement during normal operation of the counterbalance. The structure connecting the ends of each torsion spring into the hardware is such that each end of the spring is always connected for rotation with either the torsion shaft of the counterbalance or the self-locking mechanism including during the adjustment or setting of the torsion in the springs. The mechanism is used in a novel method of setting or adjusting torsion spring tension in which the door is initially in a down position with the door unlocked and springs unwound. The springs are then wound to initially partly fit the door and then unwound to seat the door to establish the proper tension in the springs. Two springs are connected to the winding mechanism and are adjusted simultaneously.

    Abstract: A door closing apparatus includes a housing member defining a cylinder for receiving a reciprocable piston member. The housing also defines an opening for receiving a rotatable pinion meshing with teeth on the piston. The apparatus also includes a linkage assembly for operatively connecting the door closing apparatus between a door and a door frame. This linkage includes a drive member for rotating the pinion bidirectionally in response to respective opening and closing of the door. An adjustable biasing assembly is provided for urging the piston in a predetermined direction within the housing cylinder, and the housing is sealed to receive a predetermined amount of oil or other fluid for hydraulically regulating the piston motion. To achieve this regulation, the housing includes an arrangement of interconnected fluid carrying channels and one or more valve members are mounted in cooperation with the channels. Advantageously the valve members cooperate with the channels to provide an adjustable variable control over the reciprocal movement of the piston, as, for example, to adjust the close rate and latch rate of the associated door. In a preferred embodiment, a hold open assembly is provided and comprises a holding member joined for rotation with the pinion and a stop member for releasably engaging the holding member to hold the door open.

    Abstract: The torsion spring winding device of the present invention comprises a gear having annular teeth thereon and additionally having means for detachably securing the gear to the free end of a torsion spring. A worm gear support is rotatably mounted to the gear so as to permit the gear to rotate independently of the worm gear support. The worm gear support carries an elongated worm gear in driving engagement with the annular teeth of the gear, and additionally includes a stop means for engaging the wall upon which the torsion spring is mounted. The method of the present invention comprises attaching a rotatable gear member having a plurality of peripheral teeth thereon to the free end of a torsion spring, engaging the peripheral teeth of the gear member with a worm gear, holding the worm gear mechanism against swinging movement with respect to the spring whereby the worm gear prevents rotation of the gear member and the free end of the spring with respect to the fixed end of the spring, rotating the worm gear to drive the gear member in a rotational direction whereby the free end of the torsion spring is rotated with respect to the fixed end thereof, and detaching and removing the gear member from the spring.

    Abstract: An automatic door closer wherein the spring which urges the door closing spindle to its starting position bears against the piston of the braking device for the spindle and against a retainer which is adjustable by means of a shaft extending from the housing of the door closer. In this way, the initial stress upon the spring can be changed in fully assembled and installed condition of the door closer. The cylinder of the braking device is rigid with the housing and has an end wall which faces the spindle and is traversed by the piston rod of the piston. The end wall serves as a support for a check valve which admits fluid into the compartment between such end wall and the piston when the spindle rotates during opening of the door but prevents the flow of fluid when the spindle rotates toward its starting position.
