Further, the first and second electrodes may be configured to provide electrical connection to the layer. A method of controlling spin transport in the layer includes a topological insulator, the method including: applying circularly polarized light on the layer; and driving an electronic component with a photocurrent produced in the layer by the circularly polarized light.

Abstract: Methods and devices for measuring full or partial Mueller matrix information in a single shot are described. One single shot polarimeter includes a polarization filter that is positioned to receive collimated light from a light source and to produce light having different polarization states. The polarization filter includes at least four sections, where each section receives a portion of the collimated light and produces light of a particular polarization state, which is spatially separated from light produced by other sections of the polarization filter. An imaging component images the sections of the polarization filter onto a plane of a sample object. One or more optical elements receive the light from the sample object and image a section of the sample object onto a detector. The disclosed devices and methods enable the measurement of the Mueller matrix of the sample with high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract: A circular dichroism measurement device includes: a sample part having a sample; a PEM that modulates a polarization state of an incoming light to the sample part or an outgoing light from the sample part; a photo detector that detects a change in a light intensity of the outgoing light from the sample part; an amplifier that amplifies a detection signal from the photo detector; an A/D converter that converts the detection signal amplified by the amplifier to a digital signal; and a digital processing device that executes a signal processing to the digital signal from the A/D converter to acquire a measurement value of circular dichroism of the sample. The A/D converter is configured to convert the detection signal, that is amplified in a state of containing the AC component and the DC component of the light intensity that changes with the same frequency as the modulation frequency of PEM.

Abstract: A polarization property image measurement device includes: a first radiation unit that radiates light beams in different polarization conditions onto a target object after subjecting the light beams to intensity modulation at frequencies different from one another; a light receiving unit including first photoelectric conversion units that photoelectrically convert the light beams having been radiated from the first radiation unit and scattered at the target object in correspondence to each of the different polarization conditions, and second photoelectric conversion units that photoelectrically convert visible light from the target object; and a processor that detects signals individually output from the first photoelectric conversion units at the different frequencies and differentiates each signal from other signals so as to determine an origin of the signal as one of the light beams; and creates an image of the target object based upon signals individually output from the second photoelectric conversion units.

Abstract: A depth map generation unit generates a depth map from images obtained by picking up a subject at a plurality of viewpoint positions by an image pickup unit. On the basis of the depth map generated by the depth map generation unit, an alignment unit aligns polarized images obtained by the image pickup unit picking up the subject at the plurality of viewpoint positions through polarizing filters in different polarization direction at the different viewpoint positions. A polarization characteristic acquisition unit acquires a polarization characteristic of the subject from a desired viewpoint position by using the polarized images aligned by the alignment unit to obtain the high-precision polarization characteristic with little degradation in temporal resolution and spatial resolution. It becomes possible to acquire the polarization characteristic of the subject at the desired viewpoint position.
