A computer-implemented method can include receiving a contact point path between a rocker arm pad and a valve tip. The method can include adjusting the contact point path to obtain a modified contact point path that satisfies a design objective of decreased valve tip wear or decreased valve tick. The method can include determining and outputting a custom contour for the rocker arm pad and the camshaft lobe based on the modified contact point path. The custom contoured camshaft lobe can companion with the custom contoured rocker arm pad to produce the modified contact point path for the specified design objective.

A variable valve timing apparatus, and internal combustion engine incorporating the same, that allows the timing of the opening and/or closing of intake and/or exhaust cylinder valves to be altered relative to a reference timing. As a result, the timing of the valve event can be adjusted relative to a phase of the crankshaft and/or the cycle of the pistons.

A cover system for an internal combustion engine having an overhead valve or overhead cam configuration includes a cover attached to a head plate. The cover has sides extending from a top surface and terminating in a flange with an overhang. The overhang includes a catch. The head plate has sides extending from a bottom surface and terminating in a curl. The flange and the overhang are positioned adjacent to the curl with the catch engaging an end of the curl.

A valve cover housing for internal combustion engines. In one embodiment, the valve cover housing includes a conduit for passing a coolant fluid near the valvetrain, and in another embodiment, the housing includes an internal protuberance or other structure that promotes the dripping of oil or another lubricant onto a selected region or component of the valvetrain, such as the valve springs.
Abstract:
A rocker arm assembly for mounting about a stud means. The rocker arm assembly generally comprises a rocker arm and a support member. The rocker arm has opposed first and second lateral ends and a central bore between the ends. The support member is positioned within the rocker arm central bore and mounted on the stud means. The rocker arm is configured to pivot about the support member. The support member has opposed lateral sides with a seal member extending along each lateral side. The seal members provide a seal between each lateral side of the support member and an internal surface of the central bore thereby providing more efficient oil lubrication to the ends of the rocker arm.
Abstract:
A fuel valve is provided in the Diesel fuel supply line to a cylinder to be deactivated. A return fuel line is provided and when the fuel valve is closed the fuel is returned to the fuel supply tank. In open position fuel is directed to the top portion of the cylinder. The cylinder is provided with a conventional exhaust valve. However, the intake valve is modified to be located closer to the top of the cylinder. The previous gap of about null inch is reduced to about 0.005 to 0.015 inches. This allows the intake valve to remain open instead of closed as the piston moves upwardly in a deactivated cylinder when the exhaust valve is closed, to allow air to enter the intake valve in the full up position of the piston. This valve system e located in all Diesel engines including Diesel powered motocycles.
Abstract:
A cam follower is provided having a thin-walled ring fixed in the bore of the shaft to extend across a parting plane between the shaft and the support. The ring includes a radially inwardly directed collar having a bore or an internal thread which is mated to a corresponding thread of a threaded fastener. Due to the fact that the collar or the internal thread is arranged in the region of an edge of the securing ring remote from the cylinder head, the threaded fastener has an adequate axial mobility in the pre-assembled state. This freedom of movement enables excellent handling during final assembly.
Abstract:
The internal combustion engine includes a cast cylinder head having as-cast alignment ribs that align a squared-off fulcrum in the rocker assembly. The rocker arm also has two substantially flat surfaces that engage the planar sides of the fulcrum to minimize lateral movement of the rocker arm. The fulcrum is received between the cast alignment ribs. The ribs are biased from a major axis to insure proper fulcrum alignment during assembly without the use of a jig.
Abstract:
A bearing support member, mountable about a support stud, has two support arms extending toward side walls of a rocker arm. A bearing cup is rigidly mounted on each respective side wall and extends over the respective arm of the bearing support member, providing an annulus. Rolling members within the annulus permit the rocker arm to freely oscillate rotatably while being constrained axially. The bearing cups may include a keyed shape to limit orientation of the bearing support member. Another aspect of the invention is a rocker arm subassembly having "open" bearing cups.
