Abstract: A compact x-ray source includes an electron beam source with a metallic film on a diamond window. The metallic film, which may be copper or scandium, absorbs the electron beams and produces k-alpha x-rays. The diamond window is a single crystal of diamond with a crystallographic orientation to diffract the x-rays, thereby producing a monochromatic and well collimated x-ray beam. The orientation of the crystal lattice may be configured to produce multiple x-ray beams. A plurality of electron beam sources may also be used to generate multiple x-ray beams. A detector is used to receive the x-ray beam after it interacts with a sample to be measured.

An x-ray transmissive window (41) is joined in a vacuum tight manner to the metal frame portion of the evacuated envelope. The material comprising the x-ray transmissive window has a backscatter coefficient. A backscatter layer (90) is deposited on the x-ray transmissive window and the metal frame portion of the evacuated envelope around the x-ray transmissive window. The backscatter layer has a backscatter coefficient greater than the backscatter coefficient of both of the window and the metal frame.

Abstract: A hot-cathode X-ray tube having an end-mounted anode and a low energy consumption, including a filament, an anode in the form of a plate orientated perpendicularly to the electron beam which is emitted by the filament, an annular auxiliary electrode having a central opening and forming a diaphragm for the electron beam and a secondary anode for back scattered electrons. The anode and the diaphragm are made from the same metal selected from silver, rhodium, copper and molybdenum and at least the portions of the secondary anode facing the primary one are coated with the same metal.The tube may be used as a source of quasi-monochromatic radiation in apparatus for spectrometry by X-ray fluorescence, diffractometry and microradiography.

Abstract: A light-metal pane usable as an X-ray transmissive or penetrable window which is constituted of a material readily permitting the passage of X-rays therethrough. The window pane is obtained through the use of a two-layer material, of which one layer is formed of light-weight metal, and the other layer comprises a heavy-weight metal. In the ray transmitting portion of the window, the heavy-weight metal layer is removed, and at the edge the light-weight metal, so that there remains the two-layer material in the transitional region towards the edge of the window.

Abstract: An x-ray window includes a mount with a support frame and an aperture. A window film has a stack of layers including: a thin film layer comprising a material selected from the group consisting of diamond, graphene, diamond-like carbon, beryllium, and combinations thereof; a boron hydride layer; and a polymer layer. The window film, including the thin film layer, the boron hydride layer, and the polymer layer, extends across the aperture and is supported by the support frame. The window film is attached to the support frame, defining a sealed joint. The layers are capable of withstanding a differential pressure of at least 1 atmosphere. The window film is substantially transmissive to x-rays having an energy in the range of 100-20,000 electronvolts.
