Abstract:
Oil soluble ethylene polymers or copolymers having a M.sub.n greater than about 4000 in combination with an oil soluble polyester material such as a homopolymer or copolymer, comprising at least 10% by weight C.sub.4 to C.sub.16 substantially straight-chain alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, are useful in improving the cold flow properties of distillate hydrocarbon oils.
Abstract:
Condensation products made by reacting an alpha-hydroxyalkyl hydroxy-aromatic compound also having at least one non-fused hydrocarbyl substituent with at least one olefinic nitrile, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative are useful as additives for fuels and lubricants. The total number of carbon atoms in the non-fused hydrocarbyl substituents is at least about seven while the alpha-hydroxyalkyl group contains from one to about 36 carbons and the olefinic acid or nitrile reactant usually contains two to about forty carbon atoms. Products made from hydroxymethyl alkyl-substituted phenols and .alpha.,.beta.-olefinic acid derivatives such as maleic anhydride are particularly useful. Similarly useful post-treated products can be made from these condensation products by further reaction with alcohols, amines, metal salts or metals.
Abstract:
Lubricating oil additives having both dispersant and viscosity-index improving properties are prepared by reacting terpolymers of ethylene, a C.sub.3 to C.sub.8 alpha-olefin, and a non-conjugated diene with maleic anhydride and certain alkane polyols.

Abstract:
Process for preparing high molecular weight polycarboxylic acid acylating agents by contacting chlorine with a reaction mixture comprising (1) high molecular weight monocarboxylic acid and ethylenically unsaturated low molecular weight mono- or polycarboxylic acid acylating agent or (2) high molecular weight aliphatic hydrocarbon, ethylenically unsaturated low molecular weight monocarboxylic acid acylating agent, and ethylenically unsaturated low molecular weight polycarboxylic acid acylating agent. Acylating agents thus produced have utility, for example, as intermediates in the preparation of acylated nitrogen compounds, esters, metal salts, and the like which are useful as additives in lubricants and fuels.
