Abstract: A beam steering architecture for an optical sensor is based upon a pair of Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) Micro-Mirror Arrays (MMAs) and a fold mirror. The MEMS MMAs scan both primary and secondary FOR providing considerable flexibility to scan a scene to provide not only active imaging (to supplement passive imaging) but also simultaneously allowing for other optical functions such as establishing a communications link, providing an optical transmit beam for another detection platform or determining a range to target. A special class of MEMS MMAs that provides a “piston” capability in which the individual mirrors may translate enables a suite of optical functions to “shape” the optical transmit beam.

Abstract: Small angle optical beam steering is performed using a Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) Micro-Mirror Array (MMA) that minimizes diffraction for a specified steering angle, Generally speaking, this is accomplished with a MEMS MMA that exhibits a “piston” capability to translate individual mirrors in addition to the tip and tilt capabilities. Adjacent mirrors can be tipped/tilted to the specified steering angle and then translated by a requisite amount to approximate a continuous surface. For a specified steering angle, the MEMS MMA is partitioned into one or more sections with each section including the maximum number of mirrors that can be grouped together and actuated to approximate a continuous surface given a maximum translation z. As a result, the only edge discontinuities exist between adjacent sections thereby minimizing distortion for a given steering angle.

Abstract: Embodiments of a satellite transceiver configurable for inter-satellite communication and configurable for satellite to ground communication are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the satellite transceiver comprises a micro-electromechanical (MEM) micro-mirror array (MMA) (MEM-MMA) configured to steer a beam of encoded optical data over a field-of-view (FOV). The MEM-MMA comprises a plurality of individual mirror elements. Each of the mirror elements is controllable by control circuitry to steer the beam over the FOV.

Abstract: Optical sensors and particularly gimbaled optical sensors transmit an active signal at a given wavelength and receive passive signals over a range of wavelengths while controlling pointing without benefit of measuring and locating the active signal return. The sensor includes a Tx/Rx Aperture Sharing Element (ASE) is configured to block the received active signal (e.g. reflections off a target in a scene) and process only the passive emissions. These optical sensors may, for example, be used with guided munitions or autonomous vehicles.

Abstract: A tip/tilt/piston (“TTP”) MEMS MMA is used to provide coherent beam combination (CBC) such that the combined beam behaves as if it were emitted from a single aperture laser, but with higher brightness than can be obtained from an individual laser. Piston actuation of the mirrors is used to adjust the phase of individual amplified laser beams and maintain a zero phase difference across all of the amplified laser beams. Tip/Tilt actuation of the mirrors is used to steer the phase-adjusted amplified laser beams to form a coherent output laser beam. Additional TTP actuation can be used to oversimple and superimpose Adaptive Optics correction or focusing/defocusing on the beam, A multi-spectral system may be implemented with a common MEMS MMA to produce a spectrally beam combined, multi-channel coherent laser beam.

Abstract: An RF antenna feed module uses an optical feed network and photo-detectors to generate RF feed signals to drive a dual polarization RF antenna to produce an RF beam with a variable polarization state. The optical feed network and suitably the photo-detectors are monolithically fabricated PIC. Multiple modules may be configured to drive a dual polarization RF phased array. A single feed module can produce RF feed signals over a frequency range of at least 300 GHz.

Abstract: Embodiments of an optical data communication apparatus using micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) micro-mirror arrays is described herein. The apparatus may include a router configured to operate as a relay to exchange optical data signals between optical switches of the apparatus. The optical switches may be configured to switch between reflection directions to reflect the optical signals over different optical connections between the optical switches and different receiving ports of the router. The reflection directions may be switched in accordance with predetermined mappings between the receiving ports of the router and destinations of the optical signals. The router includes a MEMS micro-mirror array configured to reflect received optical signals to the destinations. A processing element of the optical data switching circuitry may generate a plurality of optical data signals and may send the optical data signals to an optical switch of the optical data switching circuitry.

Abstract: A situation awareness sensor includes a plurality of N sensor channels, each channel including an optical phased array (OPA) having a plurality of solid-state laser emitters, a command circuit and a detector. The command circuit controls the relative phase between the laser emitters to command a divergence, shape and exit angle of a spot-beam to scan a channel field-of-view (FOV). Abstract: Imaging systems and a method of generating an image. One example of an imaging system includes a detection subsystem including a focal plane array (FPA) coupled to a read-out integrated circuit (ROIC), the ROIC being configured to activate a portion of the FPA in a selected pattern during an integration period, an optical scanning subsystem including an optical source and a waveguide, the waveguide being configured to direct optical radiation generated by the optical source within a field of view of the detection subsystem and over an area of a scene, the portion of the FPA activated in the selected pattern corresponding to the area of the scene, and an adaptive polymer lens assembly positioned at an aperture of the imaging system shared by the detection subsystem and the optical scanning subsystem, the adaptive polymer lens assembly being configured to adjust an optical magnification of the scene.

Abstract: A system for aligning a weapon to a high-performance target sensor. A reference measurement sensor installed on the target sensor measures the direction and range to each of several references points on the weapon. From these measurements, and measurement by the target sensor of target states, a processing circuit calculates the states of the target in a coordinate system of the weapon. Each reference point may be a retroreflector; the reference measurement sensor may include an imaging sensor to measure direction, and a laser range finder to measure range.
