    Abstract: This invention provides a high-solids coating composition which comprises (A) a compound which has at least one radically polymerizable unsaturated group per molecule, (B) a hydroxyl group-containing ester compound which is obtained by ester-forming addition reaction between 2,2-dimethylolalkanoic acid having 6 to 8 carbon atoms and alkanoic acid monoglycidylester, and which has an acid value of 20 mgKOH/g or less, (C) a curing agent which is reactive with the above-mentioned hydroxyl group-containing ester compound (B), and (D) a photopolymerization initiator, and also provides a process to form a coating film by spray coating of said coating composition, which process is characterized by irradiating flying paint particles which have been sprayed and/or paint which has been applied onto a substrate with active energy ray so as to make the coating composition partially react, and by subsequently heating the coating composition.

    Abstract: Polyesterdiols having low viscosities of less than 3500 cps, high content of non-volatile matter in excess of 96 wt %, and narrow molecular weight distribution of less than about 1.4 are prepared by esterification of one or more aliphatic dicarboxylic acids or ester derivatives thereof using at least a 1.5 molar excess of one or more aliphatic diols until an acid number of less than 20 is achieved, and stripping excess diol from the polyesterdiol reaction product. Where esterification catalyst is used, catalyst is substantially removed prior to stripping excess unreacted diol from polyesterdiol reaction product. The polyesterdiols so produced are useful as (i) curable components in thermosettable resin compositions, particularly compositions essentially free of volatile organic solvent and also containing a crosslinking agent and a reactive hardening agent: and/or (ii) useful as coatings, paints and adhesives, providing coatings with very low content of volatile organic compounds.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a curable coating composition that includes a compound having both hydroxy functionality and carbamate functionality of the structure ##STR1## wherein R is H or alkyl, a polyisocyanate crosslinking agents and an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The effective equivalents of the aminoplast crosslinking agent is equal to or less than the equivalents of carbamate functionality and the effective equivalents of polyisocyanate crosslinker is equal to or less than the equivalents of hydroxyl functionality. The carbamate-functional resin and the aminoplast crosslinking agent provide rheology control during the early part of the bake to cure an applied coating of the coating composition.

    Abstract: An aqueous protective coating composition particularly useful for can coatings based on a polymeric binder comprises diepoxide crosslinked microgel particles. The microgel polymer is produced by dispersing into water a carboxyl functional acrylic-epoxy copolymer and combined with a carboxyl functional latex polymer along with a low molecular weight diepoxide, followed by coreaction and crosslinking between the carboxyl polymers and the diepoxide to form stable aqueous dispersed microgel particles. In a preferred aspect of the invention, the carboxyl latex polymer is a swollen latex polymer.
