Abstract:
The invention features a system for treating liquid including a liquid treatment device comprising adsorbent media for removing a substance from liquid and a pH adjuster device located upstream of the liquid treatment device relative to a direction of flow of the liquid. The pH adjuster device contains particulate or solid state pH adjuster material capable of releasing H or OH groups into the liquid or consuming H or OH groups from the liquid effective to raise or lower the pH of the liquid while it passes through the media. The pH adjuster may include acidifier or basifier material. Also featured is a method of using the device to remove a substance from liquid by adsorption and/or ion exchange.

Abstract:
A medium having a support structure configured for circulation of a fluid therein, such as a replaceable filter cartridge, including a sanitizing agent which contains one or more reactants that are chemically configured for delivering chlorine dioxide or other sanitizing agents in a controlled dose to sanitize, deodorize, and disinfect upon being wetted by the fluid and positioned in the medium support structure to be exposed to the fluid circulating therein.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method and apparatus for removing impurities from waste water by electroflotation. The waste water to be cleaned is conducted through an electrolytic cell. Electrolysis is performed between two electrodes (1, 2) of different electronegativities, such that the more electronegative electrode (1), which is non-wearing in a cleaning process, is used for producing hydrogen gas and hydroxyl ions from water. The less electronegative electrode (2), which is an active, wearing electrode in a cleaning process, is used for producing metal ions in a solution to be cleaned. In addition to this basic reaction, a desired oxidation-reduction reaction is initiated in the cell in a strictly controlled electric field for removing one or more designated impurities from cleaned water.
Abstract:
An electrodialysis cell (40) suitable for removal of paint solubilizer from electrocoat paint ultrafilter permeate includes a tubular, non-conductive housing (42), a substantially cylindrical, hollow object electrode (48) in the housing, a substantially cylindrical counter electrode (52) situated within the hollow object electrode, and a tubular ion exchange membrane (50) around the counter electrode but spaced from the counter electrode as well as the object electrode. The counter electrode and the tubular membrane together define an annular electrolyte passageway while the object electrode and the tubular membrane together define an annular ultrafilter permeate passageway. The object electrode-to-counter electrode area ratio is at least about 6.
Abstract:
The invention provides an electrolysis apparatus for the production of hydrogen and oxygen, which apparatus includes at least two or more tubular electrodes, at least one of which is an inner electrode located in at least one outer electrode, and a separator interposed between the inner and outer electrodes and substantially coextensive therewith. One or more of the electrodes may, in use, be an anode. One or more of the electrodes may, in use, be a cathode.
Abstract:
The present invention features a device for treating liquid including a containment member comprised of rigid porous polymer configured to form a containment space. Nonbonded particulate media is disposed in the space in contact with and contained by the containment member. Pores in the containment member are characterized by pore paths and pore sizes effective to permit flow of liquid through the pores while preventing the media from traveling through the pores. The containment member may be in various shapes and include different numbers of components. One variation of the containment member includes first and second containment layers comprised of the rigid porous polymer, which are configured and arranged so as to form a space therebetween in which the media is contained. Another variation of the containment member includes first and second porous polymer tubes forming a space in which the media is contained. Also featured is a method of using the device. Another aspect of the invention is a system that includes the device and a pH adjuster device that may function as an acidifier or basifier, which improves the performance of the liquid treatment device in removing substances from liquids by raising or lowering the pH of the influent traveling through the media of the liquid treatment device.
