Abstract: A receiving network node (210) configured to select from received packets differing by time of initial transmission from a sending network node (230), and accepting for transmission, based on initial transmission time, the selected packets to an application layer (740). An internetworked processor node configured to: (a) read a sequence number and an originator identifier of a received packet message (810); (b) compare a stored highest sequence number associated with the originator identifier with the received packet sequence number (820); (c) if the received packet sequence number is less than or equal to the stored highest sequence number associated with the originator identifier, then discard (840) the received packet; and (d) if the received packet sequence number is greater than the stored highest sequence number associated with the originator identifier, then deliver (860) the message of the received packet to an application based on an upper layer protocol.

Abstract: Techniques for efficiently deriving uplink channel estimates without consuming much additional uplink resources are described. A user equipment (UE) may send a request for uplink resources on a request channel (REQCH) whenever the UE desires to transmit data on the uplink. The UE may send the REQCH on a set of subcarriers and from multiple antennas, e.g., send REQCH data on data subcarriers and pilot on pilot subcarriers. A Node B may receive the request, estimate the complex channel gains for the pilot subcarriers based on received pilot symbols, and coherently demodulate received data symbols based on the channel gain estimates. The Node B may estimate the complex channel gains for the data subcarriers based on demodulated data symbols and derive a channel estimate for each UE antenna based on the channel gain estimates for the pilot and data subcarriers. The Node B may use the channel estimates for MIMO scheduling, subband scheduling, and rate selection.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving performance in communication systems is provided. In one implementation, initial encoded data that has been encoded with a rateless code is received. A quality metric is determined for a communication medium on which the initial encoded data has been received. A modulation scheme used in sending the initial encoded data on the communication medium is identified. An estimate is determined, based on the identified modulation scheme and the determined quality metric, of an amount of mutual information being received per unit of received encoded data. An amount of mutual information being received is determined, based on the determined estimate.

Abstract: Uplink transmission from a mobile device having multiple antennas to a base station having multiple antennas includes transmitting in an open-loop single-user MIMO mode when the mobile device is at high speed, transmitting in a closed-loop single-user MIMO mode when the mobile device is at low speed, and, upon request, transmitting in a multi-user collaborative MIMO mode. The method also includes controlling uplink transmissions in a selected one of the open-loop single-user MIMO, the closed-loop single-user MIMO and the multiuser collaborative MIMO modes. Uplink transmissions from the mobile device may be transmitted using multiple antennas of the mobile device. Upon request, the mobile device may switch to transmitting in multi-user collaborative MIMO mode with a subset of the multiple antennas.
