Abstract: Water-responsive actuators and methods for creating water responsive actuators are disclosed. In some embodiments, the disclosed subject matter includes a first layer, for example a plastic tape, and a second layer, for example bacterial spores and cured adhesive. The second layer can be created in a pattern. The pattern can include joints, which can contract when exposed to dry air and can thereby bend the actuator, and can expand when exposed to humid air and thereby return the actuator its original position.

Abstract: A continuous method of manufacturing adhesives is provided. The method includes obtaining an actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition disposed on a major surface of an actinic radiation-transparent substrate and irradiating a first portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate for a first irradiation dosage. The method further includes moving the actinic radiation-transparent substrate and irradiating a second portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate for a second irradiation dosage. Optionally, the method also includes irradiating a third portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate prior to moving the substrate. The first irradiation dosage and the third irradiation dosage are often not the same, thereby forming an integral adhesive having a variable thickness in an axis normal to the actinic radiation-transparent substrate.

Abstract: An automated painting system that includes a robotic arm and a painting end effector coupled at a distal end of the robotic arm, with the painting end effector configured to apply paint to a target surface. The painting system can also include a computing device executing a computational planner that: generates instructions for driving the painting end effector and robotic arm to perform at least one painting task that includes applying paint, via the painting the end effector, to a plurality of drywall pieces, the generating based at least in part on obtained target surface data; and drives the end effector and robotic arm to perform the at least one painting task.

Abstract: Laser jetting of droplets of a viscous material, such as an ink, is performed by coating a layer of ink on a mesh-like transport screen, with the ink being retained within spaces of the mesh-like transport screen. The ink-coated mesh-like transport screen is conveyed to a working area and a laser beam is used to heat the ink within the spaces of the mesh-like transport screen, thereby causing ink droplets to be jetted from the spaces of the mesh-like transport screen. Structures are formed on a receiving substrate arranged near the working area by jetting the ink droplets, either in an aggregation or sequentially, across a gap from the mesh-like transport screen to the receiving substrate and displacing the mesh-like transport screen and the laser beam relative to one another at times between the jetting of the droplets, or by directly printing ink droplets onto the receiving substrate.

Abstract: A UV curable dielectric coating is described. The curable coating can include one of more acrylate monomers, a urethane prepolymer, a crosslinker, at least one adhesion promoter, a photoinitiator, and optionally one or more fillers and/or additives. The coating can be used to insulate battery cells and battery packs, such as those used in electric vehicles. The coatings can be easily applied and quickly cured. The cured coatings can have high adhesion strength, even after exposure to wet conditions.

Abstract: A laser-assisted microfluidics manufacturing process has been developed for the fabrication of additively manufactured structures. Roll-to-roll manufacturing is enhanced by the use of a laser-assisted electrospray printhead positioned above the flexible substrate. The laser electrospray printhead sprays microdroplets containing nanoparticles onto the substrate to form both thin-film and structural layers. As the substrate moves, the nanoparticles are sintered using a laser beam directed by the laser electrospray printhead onto the substrate.

Abstract: The laser-induced dispensing system includes a cartridge assembly having a supply reel for supplying a foil having a light transmissive layer wound around the supply reel, and a take-up reel for taking up the foil. There is provided a coating device for coating the foil by a donor material during a motion of the foil. The laser-induced dispensing system also includes an irradiation head having optics configured for focusing a laser beam. Additionally, a controller, for controlling the cartridge assembly to establish motion of the foil, and the optics to focus the laser beam onto the foil at a location downstream of the outlet of the coating device so as to release droplets of the donor material from the foil is provided.
