Abstract: According to a control strategy, a cylinder valve control device is monitored and operation of the engine is modified. The cylinder valve control device includes a driving shaft driven by the engine to drive an intermediate member which in turn drives a cam arranged to open an engine intake valve, and a driver which is operative in response to a command to vary an amount of eccentricity of the intermediate member with respect to a shaft axis of the driving shaft. During one mode of engine operation, the intermediate member is supported in a support for rotation about an axis in eccentric condition with respect to the shaft axis to accelerate and decelerate the cam with respect to rotation of the driving shaft. During another mode of engine operation, the intermediate member is in concentric condition with respect to the shaft axis to provide a synchronous motion of the cam with rotation of the driving shaft. In response to the eccentricity of the intermediate member, the engine operation is modified.

Abstract: A cam shaft assembly comprises a first coupling between a drive collar rotatable with a driving shaft and an annular disc at a first position spaced from the shaft axis, and a second coupling between the disc and said hollow cam at a second position angularly spaced from said first position with respect to the shaft axis. The first and second couplings are so spaced from the shaft axis that they are at varying distances from the axis of the disc during operation. Each of the first and second couplings has a movable connection with the disc to permit the variation in its distance from the axis of the disc. The disc is rotatably supported in a disc housing. A control rod is mounted for rotation and has an eccentric control cam which controls movement of the disc housing. A pivot shaft extends through the disc housing for allowing movement of the disc housing following the eccentric control cam in which said plurality of hollow cams are disposed.

Abstract: A cam is capable of angular movement on a cam shaft. A disc eccentrically mounted on the shaft is driven from the shaft via a pin connection and drives the cam by a similar connection. The degree of eccentricity of the disc, which is adjustable, determines the acceleration and deceleration given to the cam as it rotates. There is disclosed an electro-mechanical servo system, responsive to the speed of an engine incorporating the cam and cam shaft, for controlling the eccentricity of the disc in dependence on the speed. Also disclosed is an electronic servo system for the same purpose.

Abstract: A valve timing regulation device includes a housing, a vane rotor, a sleeve and a spool. The housing is fit to an end of a camshaft. The sleeve has a supply port, a drain port, a first control port, a second control port and a first drain oil passage. The spool has a connection oil passage provided to a shaft center part to connect the supply port to either the first control port or the second control port according to an own axial position. The drain port is connected to a drain space through a second drain oil passage provided to span the vane rotor and the camshaft. A hydraulic oil of a retard chamber is discharged to the drain space through the second drain oil passage. It is unnecessary to provide a discharge hole to the camshaft, and a shaft length of the camshaft can be shorter.

Abstract: A method for controlling intake and exhaust valves of an engine may include: determining, by a controller, a target opening duration of the intake and exhaust valves based on an engine load and an engine speed; modifying, by an intake continuous variable valve duration (CVVD) device and by an exhaust CVVD device, current opening and closing timings of the intake valve and/or exhaust valve based on the target opening duration of the valves; and advancing or retarding, by the intake and/or exhaust CVVD devices, the current opening timing of the intake and exhaust valves while simultaneously retarding or advancing the current closing timing of the intake and exhaust valve by a predetermined value based on the target opening duration.
