Abstract:
A doctor blade assembly has a doctor blade supported in a blade holder. The blade has a projecting front edge adapted to be placed in contact with a moving surface to be doctored, and a rear edge adapted to be received in the blade holder. The blade is preloaded in a manner such that tensile stresses are induced in the front edge thereof. The level of such tensile stresses is below the yield strength of the blade material, yet high enough to prevent compressive stresses from developing at the blade front edge as a result of heat being generated by frictional contact between the blade and the moving surface being doctored.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for preventing smudging of indicia printed on a surface by selective application of an amount of coating material to lubricate the contact with surfaces abrading the printed indicia or to provide physical separation from abrading surfaces, and thus prevent smearing. The coating material is preferably a "Teflon" micropowder that is applied by using impulse devices to dispense controlled amounts of the micropowder from a container, with the dispensed micropowder being transferred to, and passing through a plurality of apertures adjacent the surface of a piece of paper on which indicia has just been printed by a nonimpact printer such as a laser printer.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of applying an adhesive, e.g., hotmelt, to containers in labeling machines. The hotmelt is contactlessly applied to the containers to be labeled by means of a nozzle applicator. After application of the adhesive to the object to be labeled, the adhesive spot or adhesive bead produced in this manner is distributed over a wide area by means of a stream of pressurized gas, e.g., pressurized air.
Abstract:
A trailing blade paper coating apparatus is disclosed which comprises means providing a resilient curved surface for supporting a moving web of cellulosic material, an applicator for a paper coating composition and a trailing blade which in use is biased towards and in contact with the moving web of cellulosic material, and which further includes a flexible blade mounted so that, in operation of the trailing blade paper coating apparatus, the flexible blade is in contact with a web of cellulosic material to be coated at a location which is upstream relative to the trailing blade and downstream relative to the applicator for the coating composition. A method is also disclosed and claimed.
Abstract:
A method for applying an emulsion onto a screen printing plate, in which two squeegees are arranged on either side of the screen, one squeegee of which is directed to the applying operation and the other squeegee is directed to the scraping and recovering operation. The method results in an emulsion film of uniform thickness being applied to the screen, with the thickness of the film being greater on the printing side of the screen.
Abstract:
A seed coating machine comprising an upper mixing drum wherein a liquid adhesive coating is applied to seed and where the rate of application is regulated by a valve controlled by the seed feeder. Coated seed is dried to a state of tackiness and passed to a second, lower mixing drum. A variety of powders are applied onto the tacky seed after being mixed and sifted in a screen distributor. The resulting coated seed has an outer powder layer which adheres to the inner adhesive coating.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for coating both sides of a moving web, such as a paper web, with the same coating material on both sides by feeding the web downwardly between a rotating support roller and a coating blade directed against said roller. One side of the web is partially wrapped around said roller and a first excess of coating material intended for the web side facing said roller is applied to the roller before or at the point of contact between said web and the roller. A second excess of coating material is applied to the other side of the web by feeding the web through a dam of coating material arranged below said contact point--in the moving direction of the web--said dam being formed substantially between said coating blade and holder and the said other side of the web. The excess coating material is laterally expressed in said dam beneath the top level thereof.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for coating at least one face of a moving web, such as a paper web, in which the web is fed longitudinally at a speed in excess of 400 meters per minute between a movable support and a blade forming, with the movable support, a nip. The blade has a bevel at the point of contact with the web, and an excess of coating material is applied at one side of the web in the nip, the coating material having a dryness content exceeding 60% and/or a viscosity exceeding 1500 cp. The angle of the blade is controlled so that it extends at most 20.degree. to the web and the bevel width, as measured in the direction of movement of the web, is at most 0.05 centimeters. Preferably, the blades are urged against the web with a force not exceeding 2 kgf per centimeter width of web.
Abstract:
A process and machine are disclosed for reflowing solder plated continuous flexible circuit webs. During reflow in a vapor environment, the flexible web is maintained in a planar orientation to produce a relatively uniform distribution of solder. Virtually all of the heat transfer fluid used in producing the vapor is recovered and retained.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for applying a coating composition onto a moving web especially a paper web, in which an excess of said coating composition is applied to said web. The web thereafter passes smoothing means to uniformly regulate the final thickness of the coating and simultaneously to remove the excess coating composition. This smoothing operation is performed under an adjustable partial vacuum. The removed excess coating composition is recirculated without being mixed with the coating composition within the application area and is mixed with fresh coating composition before reuse within the process.
