Abstract:
This invention relates to low sulfur fuel compositions which exhibit improved lubricity compared to the low sulfur fuels alone. The low sulfur fuel compositions contain a middle distillate fuel having a sulfur content of 0.2% by weight or less, a carboxylic acid amide and at least one member selected from the group consisting of cold flow improvers, ashless dispersants, and mixtures thereof.

C. below the wax appearance point of the fuel, and either: (i) a final boiling point of greater than 355.degree. C. and either a (90-20%) distillation range of greater than 115 .degree. C. or a (FBP-90%) distillation range of 30.degree. C. or greater; or (ii) a final boiling point of greater than 360.degree. C. and either a (90-20%) distillation range of greater than 110.degree. C. or a (FBP-90%) distillation range of 25.degree. C. or greater; or (iii) a final boiling point of greater than 370.degree. C. and either a (90-20%) distillation range of greater than 100.degree. C. or a (FBP-90%) distillation range of 250.degree. C. or greater), and (B) a minor proportion of an additive comprising: (B1) an ethylene-unsaturated ester copolymer flow improver, other than an ethylene-vinyl acetate bipolymer, the flow improver having an unsaturated ester content of greater than 10 mole %; and, optionally, (B2) an ethylene-unsaturated ester copolymer that is different from (B1).
Abstract:
Novel terpolymers are disclosed which comprise the reaction product of a high molecular weight olefin, such as polybutene or polypropylene, with an unsaturated acid reactant, such as maleic anhydride and a di-or polyunsaturated reactant. The terpolymers are useful as dispersants in lubricating oils and fuels and are also used to prepared polysuccinimides and other post-treated additives useful in lubricating oils and fuels.
Abstract:
Combustion chamber deposits and intake valve deposits in a spark ignition internal combustion engine which uses a liquid hydrocarbon or liquid hydrocarbon-oxygenate fuel, by using an unleaded fuel to which has been added an additive selected from the group consisting of low boiling alkyl pyridines, 4-vinylpyridine, DMF, N-formylpiperidine, sulfolane, polyolefin, polyether or polyether amine derivatives of DMF, amidene, or N-substituted-2 pyrrolidones, polyolefin in an amount of at least about 1,000 wppm and mixtures thereof. Functionalized polymer detergents can be used alone and added to the fuels in amounts in of about at least 3,000 wppm.
Abstract:
The low temperature properties of a blend of biofuel and petroleum-based fuel oil are improved by the addition of an ethylene-unsaturated ester copolymer, or a comb polymer, or a polar N compound, or a compound having at least one linear alkyl groups connected to a non-polymeric organic residue.
Abstract:
A novel copolymer of an unsaturated acidic reactant and an atactic vinyl terminated propene polymer (VTPP) and its use in preparation of fuel and lubricant additives is taught. The VTPP has a major amount of polymer chains containing terminal vinyl unsaturation, a number average molecular weight of at least 500, and comprises at least 70 weight per cent propene and 0 to 30 weight per cent of at least one olefin selected from the group consisting of C.sub.2 and C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 olefins. The unsaturated acidic reactant comprises at least one unsaturated C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride. An oil soluble dispersant additive of the invention useful in oleaginous compositions is prepared by contacting the atactic VTPP copolymer with at least one nucleophilic reagent selected from the group consisting of amines, alcohols, metal reactants and mixtures thereof under conditions effective to form adducts of the nucleophilic reagent with the copolymer. The novel dispersants made from the copolymers and terpolymers of the invention can be polymeric succinic ester-amide dispersants, polymeric succinimide dispersants, polymeric succinic amide-triazole dispersants, or polymeric succinic triazole dispersants. Fuel and lubricant compositions containing such additives are a part of the invention.
Abstract:
A compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is hydrogen or hydroxy, and Y is --R or --C(O)O--R, wherein R is a polyalkyl group having an average molecular weight of about from 450 to 5000; or a fuel soluble salt thereof. The compounds of formula I are useful as hydrocarbon fuel additives for the prevention and control of deposits, especially intake valve deposits, in internal combustion engines.
Abstract:
Crude oils, lubricating oils or fuel oils have their flow point improved by adding to the crude oil, lubricating oil or fuel oil a minor proportion by weight of a polymer containing the repeating units: ##STR1## where x is an integer and y is 0 or an integer and wherein in the total polymer x+y is at least two.
