Abstract: In one embodiment, a personal care implement is disclosed. The personal care implement has an emitting end and an electromagnetic source for projecting electromagnetic radiation onto an area of skin to treat a skin condition. A light sensor is configured to sense an amount of ambient light present at the emitting end. A controller instructs the electromagnetic source to begin projecting only when the light sensor senses that the amount of ambient light at the emitting end is below a predefined threshold.

Abstract: An imaging system may include: a scan head optically coupled to the light source and configured to scan light from a light source onto a portion of a specimen and to receive light reflected from the portion of the specimen; an interferometer optically coupled to the light source and to the scan head to receive and generating an interference output using light from the light source and light reflected from the portion of the specimen; a scanning spectrometer optically coupled to the interferometer to receive the interference output and generating a scanned output, the scanned output having a sub-spectrum of light which is narrower than a spectrum of light generated by the light source; and a detector optically coupled to the scanning spectrometer to detect the scanned output and generating a detector signal from the detected scanned output.

Abstract: An oral care evaluation system may include: a light source configured to emit a spectrum of light which induces fluorescence in an organic compound, the light source illuminating soft oral tissue within an oral cavity; an image sensor receiving light generated by fluorescence of the organic compound on the soft oral tissue, the image sensor generating image data for an image of the oral tissue, the image comprising a plurality of pixels; and an image processor receiving the image data from the image sensor and programmed to evaluate oral hygiene of the soft oral tissue by assessing an attribute of each pixel in the image.

Abstract: A system, instrumentality, and method for performing an oral care evaluation of a user via electrical impedance tomography (EIT). For example, a system may include an oral care device having a first member housing a first electrode. The first electrode may be configured to transmit a first signal through a gingiva of a user to cause an altered first signal. The oral care device may have a second member housing a second electrode. The second electrode may be configured to receive the altered first signal. The system may be configured to generate an electrical impedance tomography (EIT) profile of the gingiva of the user, for example, based on data indicative of the first signal and the altered first signal. An oral health characteristic of the user may be determined based on the EIT profile of the gingiva of the user.
