Abstract: A solid-state gas spectrometer for detection of molecules of target gases. An emitter generates light having wavelengths both within and outside of one or more absorption bands of a target molecule. The light provided by the emitter passes through an airway adapter. A reflective beam splitter splits the light transmitted through the airway adapter, into two convergent beams each focused on a light detector. One of the light detectors, which is covered by a filter that rejects light having wavelengths within one or more absorption bands of the target molecule, serves as the sensing detector. The other light detector, which may or may not be covered by a filter, serves as the reference detector. The concentration of a target gas molecule in the gas sample is estimated based on a differential signal that is generated using the signals received from the reference and sensing detectors.

Abstract: A hyperspectral sensing device may include an optical collector configured to collect light and to transfer the collected light to a sensor having spectral resolution sufficient for sensing hyperspectral data. In some examples, the sensor comprises a compact spectrometer. The device further comprises a power supply, an electronics module, and an input/output hub enabling the device to transmit acquired data (e.g., to a remote server). In some examples, a plurality of hyperspectral sensing devices are deployed as a network to acquire data over a relatively large area. Methods are disclosed for performing dark-current calibration and/or radiometric calibration on data obtained by the hyperspectral sensing device, and/or another suitable device. Data obtained by the device may be represented in a functional basis space, enabling computations that utilize all of the hyperspectral data without loss of information.

Abstract: Systems and methods for color selection are provided. A user device displays room types on a display, receives a room type selection indicating a particular room type, displays phrases having words associated with types of feelings, and receives a phrase selection indicating a particular phrase. The user device accesses a lookup table that associates the room types and phrase with paint colors such that each possible combination of room type and phrase is associated with a subset of paint colors. The user device determines the associated subset of paint colors in the lookup table for the combination of the particular room type and the particular phrase and displays the associated subset of paint colors as recommended paint colors for the combination of the particular room type and the particular phrase on the display of the user device.

Abstract: A system for detection and coating analysis that comprises a digital camera and a light-based protractor positioned adjacent to or on a physical coating surface. The system identifies a particular angular indication being displayed by the light-based protractor. The system then identifies a target color of the physical coating surface and identifies one or more target coating texture characteristics of the physical coating surface. Additionally, the system identifies a proposed coating that comprises a proposed color that matches the target color and proposed coating characteristics that match the one or more target coating texture characteristics. The system then displays, on a user interface, the proposed coating.

Abstract: A spectrometer capable of providing information, to a measurer, necessary for determining whether a sample set to the spectrometer is a sample expected by the measurer or not before a main measurement includes a data processor and a display. The data processor calculates a preliminary spectral information of the sample based on at least n of a latest detected signal and a BKG information retained in advance, calculates and updates the preliminary spectral information based on at least n of the latest detected signal and the BKG information again, and repeats these calculations and updates. The display shows the preliminary spectral information that is calculated and updated in the preview display. The data processor starts integration of N (N>n) of the detected signal during a preview display of the preliminary spectral information, and acquires a spectral information of the sample.

Abstract: Systems and methods spectrally and radiometrically calibrate an optical spectrum detected with a color-image sensor of an optical spectrometer. When the color-image sensor includes a Bayer filter, the red-peaked, green-peaked, and blue-peaked spectral responses of the color filters forming the Bayer filter may be used to identify unique spectral signatures in the red, green, and blue color channels. These spectral signatures may be used to associate calibration wavelengths to the pixel locations of the color-image sensor where the spectral signatures are observed. A fitted model may then be used to associate a wavelength to each pixel location of the color-image sensor. These systems and methods account for translational shifts of the optical spectrum on the color-image sensor induced by optical image stabilization, and thus may aid optical spectrometry utilizing a digital camera in a smartphone or tablet computer.

Abstract: An aircraft-mounted external fire detection system includes optical circuitry and processing circuitry. The optical circuitry is mounted on an aircraft forward of an engine nacelle of the aircraft, and is configured to optically monitor an exterior of the engine nacelle for a hydrocarbon fire by detecting radiation outside of the visible light spectrum. The processing circuitry is communicatively coupled to the optical circuitry and is configured to use the optical circuitry to determine that the fire has been continuously present for more than a threshold duration, and in response, transmit a warning to an operator terminal of the aircraft.
