Abstract:
IRRADIATION OF AN ACID-FREE ACETONE SOLUTION OF A 2,6DI(C1-8 SECONDARY OR TERTIARY ALKYL)PHENOL AND A BENZOPHENONE, WHICH CAN CHAVE PARA-SUBSTITUENTS, USING LIGHT HAVING A WAVELENGHT IN THE RANGE OF 300-500 MU PRODUCES A TRIPHENYL CARBINOL INTERMEDIATE. REPLACING THE ACETONE WITH ACIDIFIED METHANOL CONVERTS THE INTERMEDIATE TO A FUCHSONE WHOSE 3- AND 5-SUBSTITUENTS ARE THOSE OF THE PHENOL REACTANT AND ANY 4 - AND 4"-SUBSTITUENTS ARE THOSE OF THE BENZOPHENEONE REACTANT. THE FUSCHSONES ARE USEFUL AS DYES AND FOR THE MAKING OF BISPHENOLS.
Abstract:
DIPHENOQUINONES PRESENT IN POLYPHENYLENE OXIDES AS A RESULT OF OXIDATION OF DIORGANOPHENOLS CAN BE SEPARATED FROM THE POLYPHENYLENE OXIDES AS BIPHENOLS BY TREATMENT OF THE MIXTURE OF THE POLYPHENYLENE OXIDE AND THE DIPHENOQUINONE WITH A HYDROGEN HALIDE.
Abstract:
A thin, continuous adherent coating is formed on a substrate by ultraviolet surface photopolymerization of a synthetic organic antithrombogenic compound in the gaseous phase. The resulting coated article exhibits antithrombogenic behavior and is suitable for prosthetic use.
Abstract:
Bisphenols are disclosed which have four phenyl groups attached to a central aliphatic carbon atom, at least two and up to four of the phenyl groups having hydroxyl groups in the para position relative to the attachment to the central aliphatic carbon atom. The bisphenols are prepared by a photochemical process involving the reaction between a fuchsone and a phenol. The products are useful as antioxidants, polymerization inhibitors and as reactants for the preparation of polyesters and polycarbonate polymers.
Abstract:
A PHOTOCHEMICAL PROCESS IS DISCLOSED FOR MAKING CERTAIN HYDROXYL DERIVATIVES OF TETRAPHENYL METHANE BY IRRADIATING A SOLUTION OF CERTAIN 2,6-DISUBSTITUTED PHENOLS AND CERTAIN FUCHSONES WITH ULTRVIOLET LIGHT IN THE PRESENCE OF CERTAIN BENZOPHENONES OR ACETOPHENONES AS A PHOTOSENSITIZER. THE PRODUCTS ARE USEFUL ANITOXIDANTS AND INTERMEDIATES FOR MAKING POLYESTER AND POLYCARBONATE RESINS.
