Abstract:
A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp, which is equipped with Hg or amalgam, has a pumping tube opening (4) with constricted cross-section or lumen. A solid body in the pumping tube (3) prevents the mercury from emerging into the discharge space. At the same time, the particular shape of the constriction and of the solid body, respectively, makes it possible for Hg vapor to diffuse through-passages between the pumping tube and the solid body into discharge vessel.
Abstract:
A method is provided for constructing an electric lamp such as, for example, a tungsten halogen capsule, using carbon monoxide as a reducing gas to remove oxides from lamp components during the manufacture thereof. To this end, prior to evacuation the lamp envelope is filled with a forming gas such as, for example, a carbon monoxide- nitrogen mixture, and the envelope is given one or more light-ups to thereby deoxidize the lamp components.
Abstract:
This invention relates to the lead-in wires used in association with press seals in soda-lime glass for achieving electrical connection into the sealed envelope of a compact fluorescent lamp. The lead-in wires have a core comprising nickel and iron. A metallic plating on the core prevents formation of Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 during lamp sealing. The invention improves lamp life by maintaining seal integrity at elevated seal temperatures.
Abstract:
A multilamp photoflash device comprising an outer housing containing a plurality of flashlamps and means for sequentially flashing the flashlamps of the device and having an antistatic coating on the surface of the outer housing is provided. The antistatic coating comprises an anionic surfactant and a deliquescent salt. A method for inhibiting electrostatic charge buildup in a multilamp photoflash device comprising an outer housing containing a plurality of flashlamps and means for sequentially flashing the flashlamps of the device is also provided. The method includes applying an antistat solution comprising an anionic surfactant and a deliquescent salt dissolved in a solvent to the surface of the outer housing of the multilamp photoflash device and evaporating the solvent from the antistat solution on the surface of the outer housing so as to form an antistatic coating thereon. The coating comprises the anionic surfactant and deliquescent salt components of the antistat solution.
Abstract:
A glow discharge starter having an hermetically sealed envelope containing an ionizable medium, a bimetallic electrode and a counter electrode located therewithin. A pair of lead-in conductors passes through one end of the envelope for electrically connecting the electrodes. A spot of dried paste is disposed on a surface within the envelope and comprises a mixture of thorium and a binder. The quantity of thorium is sufficient to reduce the dark effect of the glow discharge starter by improving the dark starting performance of the glow discharge starter.
Abstract:
A high-voltage photoflash lamp is provided wherein the primer material is electrically insulated from the metallic shreds therein by an adherent layer of hollow electrically insulating beads. The layer of hollow beads is contiguous to the surface of the primer material within the lamp envelope.
Abstract:
A miniaturized multilamp photoflash array including a transparent plastic cover member with the cover member having at least one prismatic barrier divider extending outwardly therefrom between a pair of parallel arrayed flashlamps. The prismatic barrier divider serves as a shield whereby sympathetic flashing of adjacent flashlamps is reduced.
Abstract:
A method for increasing the life and stability of tungsten filaments by burning the filaments in an atmosphere containing WF.sub.6. The procedure effects hot spot repair of the filaments by localized deposition of tungsten thereon.
Abstract:
A photoflash device circuit board assembly including a dielectric substrate and at least one switching element and conductor die-stamped therein. To assure that the delicate switch is not severed by the die's cutting edge during die-stamping, a relief means (e.g., slot) is provided within the substrate so that a segment of the switch can be aligned therewith. As an alternative, it is taught to provide stepped portions within the die's cutting edge to align with preselected portions of the switch and thus prevent total severance thereof.
Abstract:
A photoflash unit having a plurality of high voltage type flashlamps mounted in a planar array on a printed circuit board containing circuitry for sequentially igniting the flashlamps in response to successive high voltage firing pulses applied thereto. The circuitry includes a plurality of solid state switches capable of being easily activated by radiant energy generated during flashing of lamps located adjacent to respective switches. Initially, the switches have a high resistance, and after being activated by radiation, they undergo chemical conversion to a conductive state. The switches are prepared from compositions which include a comparatively large proportion of nonconductive inert particulate solids to improve switch functioning.
