Abstract:
The invention provides methods for producing a strong, light, sorbent-based storage/dispenser system for gases and fuels. The system comprises a porous monolithic material with an adherent strong impervious skin that is capable of storing a gas under pressure in a safe and usable manner.
Abstract:
The technical field of the invention is CO2 capture and sequestration, as well as gas separation and purification technologies. In an aspect is a process for capturing purified CO2 from a CO2-containing gas, comprising steps: (a) contacting in an absorber column the CO2-containing gas with an absorption solution comprising water, ammonia, and potassium carbonate, to enable adsorption of CO2, thereby producing a CO2-depleted gas and a CO2-rich solution; and (b) subjecting the CO2-rich solution to desorption conditions in a regeneration column producing a purified CO2 gas stream and a CO2-depleted solution.
Abstract:
The invention relates to contactors suitable for use, for example, in manufacturing and chemical refinement processes. In an aspect is a hybrid indirect/direct contactor for thermal management of counter-current processes, the contactor comprising a vertical reactor column, an array of interconnected heat transfer tubes within the reactor column, and a plurality of stream path diverters, wherein the tubes and diverters are configured to block all straight-line paths from the top to bottom ends of the reactor column.

Abstract:
The invention provides methods for preparing an asymmetric hollow fiber, the asymmetric hollow fibers prepared by such methods, and uses of the asymmetric hollow fibers. One method involves passing a polymeric solution through an outer annular orifice of a tube-in-orifice spinneret, passing a bore fluid though an inner tube of the spinneret, dropping the polymeric solution and bore fluid through an atmosphere over a dropping distance, and quenching the polymeric solution and bore fluid in a bath to form an asymmetric hollow fiber.

Abstract:
Example systems are described for producing solar grade silicon from a silicon-generating reaction and recycled silicon particles. In one example, a system for manufacturing high purity solid silicon includes a reactor and a cooling chamber. The reactor includes one or more outlets and a reactor chamber. The one or more outlets are configured to receive a silicon tetrahalide, a reducing agent, and recycled silicon particles. The reactor chamber is configured to react the silicon tetrahalide and the reducing agent to produce fresh silicon, a halide salt, and reaction heat. The reactor chamber heats the recycled silicon particles, the fresh silicon, and the halide salt using at least a portion of the reaction heat to form molten silicon and molten halide salt. The molten silicon includes melted fresh silicon and melted recycled silicon particles. The cooling chamber is configured to cool the molten silicon to form the solid silicon.

Abstract:
A method and reactor for removing a component from a gas stream is provided. In one embodiment, the method includes providing the gas stream containing the component that is to be removed and adsorbing the component out of the gas stream as the gas stream rises via microbeads of a sorbent falling down an adsorber section of a reactor.
