OIL-SOLUBLE COMPOUNDS ARE PREPARED BY REACTING A NITRO-NITRITO ALKANE CONTAINING AT LEAST TEN CARBON ATOMS, AN ALKYLENE POLYAMINE, AND SULLFUR IN THE MOLAR RATIO OF FROM ABOUT 1,0:0.03:1.0 TO ABOUT 1,0:0.5:2.0, RESPECTIVELY, COMPOUNDS SO FORMED ARE USEFUL ANTI-RUST, ADDITIVES IN OLEAGINOUS COMPOSITIONS.
Abstract:
REACTION OF AN ALPHA-NITRO ALKYL AMINE CONTAINING NITRO AND AMINO GROUPS ON ADJACENT CARBON ATOMS WITH AN ALIPHATIC PRIMARY AMINE OR AN ALIPHATIC POLYAMINE AND SULFUR DIOXIDE REDUCES THE NITRO GROUP AND FORMS THE CORRESPONDING ALIPHATIC ALPHA-IMINO AMINE CONTAINING IMINO AND AMINO GROUPS ON ADJACENT CARBON ATOMS. SUCH ALIPHATIC ALPHA-IMINO AINES ARE USEFUL PER SE AS ANTIOXIDANTS, SURFACTANTS, DETERGENTS, ANTI-RUST AGENTS, AND FLOTATION AGENTS IN AQUEOUS AND HYDROCARBON SYSTEMS, OR AS CHEMICAL INTERMEDIATES, FOR EXAMPLE FOR PREPARATION OF DYES.
WHEREIN R IS AN ALKYL GROUP, CAN BE PREPARED BY A CHLOROSULFONATION OF ALKYLBENZENE HYDROCARBONS WITHOUT FORMATION OF SULFURIC ACID AND WITHOUT CHLORINATION OF ALKYLBENZENE SULFONIC ACID. SAID METHOD IS CARRIED OUT BY REACTING ALKYLBENZENE WITH 1.0:1.0 MOLAR MIXTURE OF CHLOROSULFONIC ACID (CISO3H) AND SULFURYLCHLORIDE (SO2CL2).

POLYMETHYLENE-CONTAINING SULFONAMIDES OF ALKYL SUBSTITUTED BENZENE SULFINIC ACIDS WHOSE ALKYL-SUBSTITUENT HAS A MOLECULAR WEIGHT IN THE RANGE OF 400 TO 2800 ARE OIL SOLUBLE, IMPART THERMALLY STABLE DISPERSANCY TO OIL SOLUTIONS OF THE SULFONAMIDES. THE SULFONAMIDES ARE PREFERABLY POLYMETHYLENE--CONTAINING DIPRIMARY AMINES SUCH AS POLYAZALKYLENE DIAMINE, POLYMETHYLENE DIAMENE, POLYETHYLENE IMINES OF 1000-40,000 MOLECULAR WEIGHT AND DI(AMINOPOLYMETHYLENE) PIPERAZINE. THE SULFONAMIDES ARE CONVENIENTLY PREPARED AS SOLUTES IN LIGHT MINERAL OIL (WHITE OIL TO SAE 10 TYPE HYDROCARBON OIL) BY REACTION OF SUITABLE ALKYLBENZENE SULFONIC ACID CHLORIDE AND THE POLYMETHYLENE-CONTAINING DIPRIMARY AMINE IN THE PRESENCE OF PYRIDINE AND C5-C8 ALKANE, REMOVING THE ALKENE AND PYRIDINE, TREATING THE RESIDUE WITH A LIGHT MINERAL OIL SUSPENSION OF CALCIUM HYDROXIDE AND FILTERING THE RESULTING MIXTURE.

Complex substituted alkylene polyamines such as di(alkenylsuccinimide) of N1,N3 symmetrical bis(aminopolyazalkylene) ureas that react with boric acid in oil solution either with low boric acid utilization efficiency or react to form a hazy product whose haze cannot be removed by filtration are readily converted to the desired oil solution of boron and nitrogen containing products by first preparing an oil solution of super boron containing product of the complex substituted alkylene polyamine, combining the oil solution of super boron containing product with oil solution of the complex substituted alkylene polyamine and equilibrating the resulting mixture to a uniform boron to nitrogen content throughout.
