Abstract: The present disclosure relates to magnetic recording disks having a magnetic recording layer that includes a plurality of three-dimensional segregant structures. Each three-dimensional segregant structure extends from a first radius of the recording disk to a second radius of the recording disk, and each three-dimensional segregant structure is made of a first segregant material. The magnetic recording layer also includes a plurality of magnetic grains between adjacent three-dimensional segregant structures, and a second segregant material between adjacent magnetic grains. The present disclosure also relates to corresponding methods of manufacturing such a magnetic recording layer.

Abstract: A method comprises forming a first structured pattern having a first line width on a substrate. A polymer brush is deposited on the structured pattern, which is annealed a first time at a first temperature and then annealed a second time at a second temperature higher than the first temperature. A block copolymer is deposited on the structured pattern and polymer brush, and aligned first block and second block structures are formed on the structured pattern and polymer brush. The first block structures and portions of the polymer brush and the structured pattern positioned beneath the first block structures are removed, and the substrate between the second block structures is exposed. The second block structures are then removed to form a second structured pattern in the substrate having a second line width, the second line width being smaller than the first line width.

Abstract: A data storage medium may have increased data capacity by being configured with first and second patterned pedestals that are each separated from a substrate by a seed layer. A first polymer brush layer can be positioned between the first and second patterned pedestals atop the seed layer and a second polymer brush layer may be positioned atop each patterned pedestal. The first and second polymer brush layers may be chemically different and a block copolymer can be deposited to self-assemble into separate magnetic domains aligned with either the first or second polymer brush layers.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods to sequence DNA. A DNA sequencing device includes a passage, a first electrode, and a second electrode. The passage has a width and a length. The first and second electrodes are exposed within the passage and spaced apart from each other to form an electrode gap. The electrode gap is no greater than about 2 nm. The DNA sequencing device is operable to measure with the first and second electrodes a change in electronic signal in response to nucleotides of a DNA strand passing through the electrode gap.
