Abstract:
A process for the reduction of the residual monomer content and enhancement of the wet strength of articles formed from water absorbent crosslinked polymer foams containing units derived from monoethylenically unsaturated acids, which comprises treating the formed articles with at least 0.5% by weight of a polymer containing primary and/or secondary amino groups and having a molar mass of at least 300, the formed foam articles thus obtainable and use of the wet strength enhanced formed foam articles in hygiene articles.
Abstract:
The invention provides a hydrogel, having a floating behaviour, wherein 40 to 90% of a solution and/or suspension to be thickened is thickened from the fluid surface and the rest of said solution and/or suspension to be thickened is thickened from the container bottom. Said invention also relates to a method for producing the hydrogel and the use thereof for absorbing blood and/or body fluids, in particular, in hygienic articles, or for thickening aqueous solutions and/or suspensions, in particular, for thickening medical waste.
Abstract:

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for making polymerized hydrogel, in particular adhesives, which are characterized by very low amount of residual starting monomer(s), impurity(s) and/or by-products which could be formed during polymerization, such as acrylamide, acrylonitrile or acrolein. After a first polymerization step, which is conducted from a reaction medium comprising starting monomer(s) and at least one polyol, the resulting hydrogel is then post-treated with a compound which chemically reacts with said residual monomer(s), impurity(s) and/or with said by-products the said polymerization could produce, to thereby reduce said residual starting monomer(s), impurity(s) and/or said by-products within said hydrogel. The present invention also relates to polymerized hydrogels, in particular adhesives, comprising 10-90 wt % water, 10-60 wt % cross-linked hydrophilic polymer made from starting monomer(s) comprising acrylic acid, and 10-80 wt % of at least one polyol, such hydrogel being prepared by polymerizing said starting monomer(s) in the presence of said water and said polyol(s), wherein such hydrogels contain less than 500 ppb, preferably less than 100 ppb, more preferably less than 50 ppb and most preferably less than 20 ppb of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl by-product(s) derived from said polyol(s) during polymerization, and wherein the level of residual starting monomer(s) is below 200 ppm, preferably below 100 ppm, more preferably below 50 ppm, even more preferably below 20 ppm, and most preferably below 10 ppm.

Abstract:
The invention relates to hydrogels capable of absorbing aqueous fluids, whic h hydrogels are produced by polymerization of olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids or their derivatives. The hydrogels are characterized in th at before, during or after the polymerization reaction and before drying a silicic acid alkali salt of the general formula (I) M2O x n SiO2 is added to the polymerization reaction mixture. In said formula M is an alkali metal an d n is a number between 0.5 and 4. The hydrogel obtained in this way is then dried at an elevated temperature. The invention also relates to a method for producing said hydrogels and to their use for absorbing aqueous fluids.
