Abstract: Finely divided, expandable styrene polymer for the prepn. of foamed bodies contains 0.0001-0.2% calcd. on the styrene polymer, of a nucleating agent for the expandable polystyrene, in inhomogeneous distribution, the nucleating agent being present in only a narrow marginal zone of the particle, the interior of the particle being free from nucleating agent. Used as esp. effective heat-conducting matl.; after foaming, each particle contains internally 5-7 cells) mm, whilst the narrow marginal zone shows a much larger cell count.

Abstract: Molding materials containing high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers are produced by a process in which a solution of a polyphenylene ether in an organic solvent, together with another polymer, is freed of solvent by multi-stage evaporation. The solvent is preferably an aromatic compound from the class comprising the hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons, ethers or esters, the ratio of the other polymer to the polyphenylene ether is advantageously from 99:1 to 20:80 parts by weight, the other polymer is, in particular, a homopolymer or copolymer of styrene or of a homolog thereof, which may be modified with rubber, and the multi-stage evaporation process preferably comprises not less than two and not more than four working up stages. The evaporation is carried out in general at from 120 DEG to 280 DEG C. and under a pressure of from 1 to 3,000 mbar, advantageously in the presence of assistants which reduce the partial pressure, eg. water and/or methanol.

Abstract: Finely divided expansible styrene polymer particles, for the prodn. of foram mouldings, contain 0.0001-0.2 phr of a nucleating agent (I) in non-homogeneous distribution, (I) being situated only in a thin band at the surface of the particles and virtually absent in the interior. Mouldings obtd. from the particles can be demoulded after a short dwell-time in the mould, have very low thermal conductivity (due to the coarse internal pore structure), have good dimensional stability (i.e. no lateral depression) and have homogeneous density.

Abstract: According to parent patent, a glass-fibre reinforced styrene polymer contains (A) 10-50% glass fibres; (B) 90-3% of a copolymer of styrene with 3-50% of an ethylenically unsatd. nono- or di-carboxylic acid, acid ester or acid amide, a dicarboxylic acid half ester or a dicarboxylic acid anhydride, and opt. other comonomers, and (C) 0-87% of a styrene homo- or copolymer miscible with (B), the glass fibres having been pre-sized with a dispersion or soln. contg. an organosilane as keying agent and opt. a plastic as film-former, the organosilane contg. reactive gps. forming chemical bonds with the functional gps. of (B). In the present improvement, the strength of the reinforced polymer is further increased by using as (B), a graft copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride onto a styrene polymer.

Abstract: A dispersion of styrene-acrylonitrile graft copolymer on a rubber-elastic polymer and a pptnt. are introduced into the pptn. zone of a tubular reactor comprising a pptn. zone, a sintering zone and a discharge zone. The reactor contains rotating supply- and mixer-units and its length: dia. ratio is 10:50. The tempo. is 20-150 degrees C in pptn. zone, 80-240 degrees C in sintering zone and o0-180 degrees C in discharge zone, provided that in sintering zone the temp. is kept at 30-90 degrees C above the temp. in pptn. zone and in discharge zone, the temp. is kept at 30-120 degrees C below the temp. in sintering zone. Average polymer dwelling time in reactor is 0.5-10 mins. Dwelling time in each of pptn.-, sintering- and discharge zone is 1/5 to 1/2 of total dwelling times and the dwelling times in the zone add up to 1. The pressure in pptn. - and sintering-zones corresponds to the liq. phase vapour pressure at the prevailing temp. The total liq. and polymer phase vol. is 10-100% of the free reactor vol. Finally, the liq. phase and sintered polymer mixt. is discharged through the discharge zone. The particles obtd. are used as additives to improve the toughness of styrene-acrylonitrile polymers. The polymer dispersion is self-sealing so that sintering zone pressure can lie above surrounding pressure without the need for a pressure-valve.

Abstract: Parent Patent discloses the continuous prepn. of foamed profiles, having thickness 1-200 mm, by (A) homogenising a mixt. contg. (a) an olefin polymer, (b) 1-30 wt. % solid organic blowing agent, decomposing on heating to generate inorganic gases, (c) 0.1-10 wt. % organic peroxide and opt. (d) 0.1-10 wt. % foaming auxiliaries, crosslinking promoters and standard additives; (B) crosslinking and foaming the olefin polymer in a foaming zone, at 160-280 degrees C; and (C) extruding the foam from foaming zone, with cooling and solidifying. In foaming zone, pressure is 5-150 bar. Ratio of foaming zone length: max. thickness is 100-2000:1. The improvement comprises applying an additional organic peroxide, c', to the surface of the homogenised mixt. of (A) before entering into foaming zone. c' is pref present at 0.001-0.1 wt. % w.r.t. (a+b+c+d)mixt. Peroxide c' is pref. added together with a lubricant, opt. contg. a solubiliser, e.g. a lower alcohol, for c'. The stronger outer skin allows the prepn. of extrudable foamed profiles having a lower gel content, e.g. 10-30 wt. %.
