    Abstract: Catalyst suitable for hydrogenation of organic cpds., comprises (all based on total wt. of catalyst); (a) 80 wt.% nickel (calculated as nickel oxide); (b) 10-25 wt.% of silicon (calculated as zirconium oxide; and (d) 0-10 wt.% of aluminium (calculated as aluminium oxide). The amt. of silicon dioxide and aluminium oxide is at least 15 wt.%. The catalyst is prepd. by; (2) adding an acidic aq. soln. of nickel-, zirconium- and opt. aluminium salts to a basic aq. soln. or suspension of silicon cpds. (and opt. aluminium cpds.), so that the pH of the resulting mixt. drops to at least 6.5; (2) adding a further basic soln. to bring the pH to 7-8; and (3) isolating the pptd. solid, which is then dried, formed and calcined.
