Abstract: A process for the continuous preparation of high-impact polystyrene-acrylonitrile (ABS) by the free radical-initiated polymerisation of a mixture of from 60 to 90% by weight of at least one vinyl aromatic monomer and from 10 to 40% by weight of at least one further ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of from 5 to 30% by weight, based on the sum of the monomers, of polybutadiene having a solution viscosity (5% strength by weight in styrene at 25 DEG C) of from 25 to 95 mPa.s and optionally in a solvent, in at least three series-connected reactors operating essentially with no back-mixing, at reaction temperatures of from 50 to 170 DEG C, phase inversion occurring in one of the reactors, the polymerisation being carried out as far as phase inversion at a temperature of 90 DEG C or below and being initiated by free radicals formed from the decomposition of tert.-butyl peresters whose half life period at 90 DEG C is not more than 20 minutes, the polybutadiene content, based on the total reaction mixture, being at least 10% by weight, and at most 25% of the entire amount of chain-transfer agent (regulator) required being added before phase inversion and the remainder thereafter.

Abstract: In a process for polymerizing dienes in a solvent comprising vinylaromatic monomers, the polymerization is carried out in the presence of a metal compound of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo or W as catalyst and a Lewis acid as cocatalyst and, if desired, an alkylating agent and, if desired, a regulator. This process can be used for preparing high-impact polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers or methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene copolymers.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of thermoplastic copolymers by continuous polymerisation of a mixture of a) a vinylaromatic monomer and b) a monomer from the group consisting of nitriles and esters of (meth)acrylic acid and of maleic anhydride, in bulk or in solution in the presence of small amounts of water, it being possible for an elastomer having a glass transition temperature of below 0 DEG C which may already be dissolved in the mixture or the components of the mixture to be present, in at least one mixed (stirred) reactor under steady-state conditions with dissipation of the heat of reaction by evaporative cooling, and subsequent discharge of the reaction products from the reactor and conventional isolation of the copolymers and recovery of the unreacted monomers, alone or together with a solvent, if one was used, and recycling thereof into the reactor together with the mixture of a) and b), where the polymerisation is carried out with the proviso that from 1 to 25% by weight of steam, based on the gases present in the vapour space of the reactor, are present in the vapour space and the reactor discharge contains less than 0.1% by weight of water.

Abstract: A process for the polymerization of dienes in a solvent containing vinyl-aromatic monomers, which is carried out in presence of an organometallic compound of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum or tungsten as catalyst and a Lewis acid as cocatalyst. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a process for the production of high-impact polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers or methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene copolymers using a rubber solution produced by the above process; (b) a process for the continuous production of impact-modified thermoplastic molding materials containing a rubber-based soft phase dispersed in a hard vinyl-aromatic matrix, by: (1) polymerizing dienes in vinyl-aromatic monomer solution as above in a first reaction zone, (2) transferring the diene rubber to a second zone and subjecting it to anionic or radical polymerization, optionally in presence of further vinyl-aromatic monomer or other comonomers in amounts sufficient to achieve phase inversion and (3) completing the polymerization in a third zone with the amount of vinyl-aromatic monomer required for the impact-modified material; and (c) a process for the production of solutions of rubber in styrene solutions with sterically demanding chelate catalysts.

Abstract: The invention relates to rubber-modified, high-impact moulding compositions containing, based on the sum of A, B1 and B2, A: from 70 to 98% by weight of a polymer matrix A, formed by free radical-initiated polymerisation of a mixture of from 60 to 90% by weight of styrene and from 10 to 40% by weight of acrylonitrile, and B1: from 1 to 29% by weight of a particulate, first graft polymer B1 distributed in the matrix and comprising a graft base of polybutadien and graft branches of a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile, having a mean particle size of from about 100 to 500 nm, B2: from 1 to 29% by weight of a particulate, second graft copolymer B2 distributed in the matrix and comprising a graft base of polybutadien and graft branches of a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile having a mean particle size of from 600 to 10000 nm, as obtained by preparing the two graft copolymers in solution and/or bulk and incorporating them into the polymer matrix in a conventional manner. e
