    Abstract: An expandable rubber modified styrene polymer (I) comprises (A) a continuous phase of polystyrene or a styrene comonomer containing up to 50 wt.% comonomer (B) 5-30 wt.% (w.r.t. polymer mixture) of dispersed rubber particles and (C) 2-15 pts.wt. (w.r.t. 100 pts wt. polymer mixture) of a low binding blowing agent. The rubber particles consists of a butadiene/styrene block copolymer having a compact lamella structure without polystyrene inclusions. Also claimed are: (i) a process for the production of (I) by dissolving (B) in (A) followed by polymerisation of the monomers and processing to a granular form whereby (C) is added during or after polymerisation. (ii) pre-foamed beads having pore walls made of (I).

    Abstract: Expandable styrene polymers (I) for elastic polystyrene foam contain (a) 50-75 wt.% polystyrene and/or a copolymer with at least 50 wt.% polystyrene, (b) 5-30 wt.% styrene-soluble elastomer(s), (c) 5-20 wt.% block copolymer(s) with a styrene component, (d) 15-50 wt.% polyolefin(s), (e) 1-15 wt.%, w.r.t. (a)+(b), of a low-boiling blowing agent and opt. (f) usual additives in effective amts. Also claimed are a method for producing (I); elastic foam with a density of 5-70 g/l prepd. from (I); and a method of producing mouldings from (I). Pref. (b) has a Tg below 20 degrees C and esp. is polybutadiene. (c) contains at least 20 wt.% styrene and is a styrene-butadiene (SB) block copolymer, esp. a SB diblock copolymer and/or SBS triblock copolymer. (d) is polyethylene, opt. mixed with polypropylene.

    Abstract: The foam is based on a copolymer (I) of styrene with 2-50 mole-% 1,1-diphenylethene (II). Also claimed are methods for making the foam in various forms. The beads are produced by impregnating (I) granulate having an average diameter of 0.1-3 mm with a volatile blowing agent in aqueous suspension at 100-180 degrees C and then either (a) cooling the suspension, separating the granulate and foaming by supplying energy in a separate stage or (b) depressurising the hot suspension and hence foaming the granulate directly. Mouldings are made by from the prefoamed beads by foaming and welding in a mould. Boards and sheets are made by plasticising (I) in an extruder, mixing with a volatile blowing agent and extrusion through a wide slit die, with foaming.
