SOLUTION: This α-alkyl styrol derivative dimer represented by formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, OH or the like; R3 and R4 are each COOR6, COR6 or the like; R5 is a 1-12C alkyl; R6 is H, a (substituted) alkyl or the like; A is O, S or the like; and B is a 1-12C alkylene, a 4-12C cycloalkylene or the like], e.g. a compound represented by formula II, is used as a photostable UV filter for cosmetic preparations or the like for protecting human skin or hair from sun beams, either individually or in combination with a known compound which absorbs light in the UV range for cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparations, e.g. 4-aminobenzoic acid.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cosmetic preparation for protecting human skins from solar light by using a partially specific new compound as a UV light filter singly or together with a known light-absorbing compound in a UV light region. SOLUTION: This α-acyl, β-allylacylnitrile of formula I (R to R are each H, a 18C aliphatic or alicyclic group, or two of R to R together form a five or six-membered ring; R , R are each an aromatic or heteroaromatic group having 5-12 atoms in the ring; R may be H) is used as a UV-A filter. A compound of formula II [R to R are each a low mol.wt. alkyl; R is 2-thienyl, 4-(3,5-di-t-butyl)-1-hydroxy, an alkoxyphenyl] among the compounds of formula I is new. The contact of the compound of formula I in a cosmetic preparation is approximately 10-90 pts.wt. based on the whole amount of the UV-B and UV-A absorbing substances. The UV-B filter substance is e.g. 4-aminobenzoic acid, etc.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect human epidermis or human hair from sunrays by using a diarylbutadiene as a water-soluble and photostable UV filter in a cosmetic and a pharmaceutical preparation. SOLUTION: A 4,4-diarylbutadiene represented by formula I R1 and R2 are each a 1-20C alkyl or the like; R3 is H, CN or the like; R4 is COOR6 [R6 is a 1-6C alkylene-SO3Y (Y is H, K+ or the like) or the like]; (n) is 1-3} is used as a water-soluble and photostable UV filter in a cosmetic and a pharmaceutical preparation for protecting human epidermis or human hair from sunrays, especially UV rays within the range of 320-400 nm. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by carrying out a condensation reaction of a compound represented by formula II with a compound represented by formula III in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. pyridine preferably at 20-150 deg.C. The compound represented by formula I is preferably contained in an amount of 0.1-10 wt.% based on the cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparation.

A part of the compound represented by formula I is new. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by reacting an activated saccharic acid with urea or a urea derivative represented by formula II, as necessary, in the presence of a tertiary base. The amount of the formulated compound represented by formula I is usually 0.1-15 wt.%, advantageously 0.3-5 wt.% in the cosmetic composition.

The compound of the formula I is obtained by reacting an ascorbic acid derivative of formula II with sorbic acid or its derivative, especially sorbic chloride, in the presence of a basic catalyst. The compound of the formula I is preferably added to a cosmetic or medicine in an amount of 0.5-5 wt.% based on the total amount of the cosmetic or medicine. The fatty acid esters of trisorbates and vitamin C-2 monosorbate can easily be mixed with ointments, lotions, etc., because of having good oil solubility.
