    Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve recording density by applying different alternating voltages to a plurality of piezoelectric converting elements provided on a slider so that they can be vibrated in various ways, and controlling the height of the flight, attitude, and release of adsorption or the like of the slider. CONSTITUTION: Piezoelectric converting elements 8A-8D in the same size are fixed to four corners at positions symmetric from a center of gravity G on a back surface 3 of a slider 1, and a means 9 which applies different alternating voltages to each element is connected. When alternating currents with the same phase are added to each element 8A-8D, the horizontal attitude of the slider 1 is held so that the center of gravity G can be held, and up and down vibration is operated. As a result, the slider 1 is floated on a static surface 4 by a compressed air film generated between a sliding face 2 and a disk surface 4. When the slider 1 is made static for a long time, and adsorbed by the surface 4, the alternating voltages with opposite phases are added to the elements 8A, 8B and 8C, 8D so that the pitching vibration cab be generated and the release can be easily attained. Thus, recording density can be improved by vibrating the slider in various ways, and controlling the height of the flight, attitude, and release of the adsorption or the like of the slider.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the device and method for efficiently implementing a head changeover by setting order of changing heads considering of offset amts. between individual heads, respectively. SOLUTION: The position of the head 82 is driven by a voice coil motor(VCM) 83, and the control on a spindle motor 81 and the VCM is implemented by a spindle motor driver 84 and a VCM driver 85, which are connected with a microprocessor unit(MPU) 86. An output signal of the head 82 is executed via an amplifier(AMP) 87, a read/write channel 88 and a hard disk controller(HDC) 90. The HDC 90 is connected with a memory 89, and the memory 89 is stored with an offset amt. table and a head sequence table as well. A read command is inputted to the MPU 86 by the HDC 90, and the head is positioned to implement the read-out of a prescribed data by the MPU86 with obtained seek objective information on the track, head and sector.

SOLUTION: The disk drive device 10 has HDC13, a cache memory 14, and a command queue holding commands cached in the cache memory 14 and is equipped with HIC 15 which processes host interface peripheries through hardware and a local MPU 16 which includes control over the HDC 13 and HDC 15 and controls the whole HDD; and the device indicates the writing of data to media to the HIC 15 with a write command cached in the cache memory 14, retrieves a retrieval source command which is completely overwritten with the latest issued command among write commands cached in the cache memory 14, and does not write data to the media with the overwritten retrieval source command.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method/device which can assure execution of an ERP (error recovery procedure) up to its last step regardless of the time needed up to the time-out of an instruction and can more surely recover an error. SOLUTION: A disk device carries out an ERP up to its last step or until an error is recovered with no interruption when a reset instruction is received during execution of the ERP. In another mode, the disk device stops execution of the ERP and also holds the number K of the step whose execution is over right before reception of a reset instruction when this instruction is received during execution of the ERP. Then the disk device successively carries out the ERP from the (K+1)th error recovery step when a retry instruction is received.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To suppress the distortion of a reading signal by generating a DC bias magnetic field for a magnetic material when the reading signal is read. CONSTITUTION: When a reading signal is read from a reading/writing coil 4, a direct current having a specified value is allowed to flow through a DC bias magnetic field coil 5 to generate DC bias magnetic fields in magnetic materials 1 and 2. At this time, a magneto striation effect is induced between the magnetic materials 1 and 2 putting a gap part 3 between from both sides. Then, the gap part 3 is compressed, and the tensile stress of the gap part 3 caused by a thermal expansion difference between the gap part 3 and the magnetic materials 1 and 2 is canceled. Thus, the reverse magnetostriction effect is not generated in the magnetic materials 1 and 2, and anisotropy is not induced. Thus, high-density recording is performed by suppressing the distortion of the reading signal.

    Abstract: An error recovery procedure (ERP) in a storage device such as a rotating magnetic hard disk drive is executed to the last step regardless of the established time-out period for an instruction, thereby more reliably recovering from errors. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, when a disk drive receives a reset instruction from a host during the execution of an ERP, it executes the ERP until the error is recovered, or to the last step without interrupting the ERP. Further, in accordance with another embodiment of the invention, when a disk drive receives a reset instruction during the execution of an ERP, it stops execution of the ERP and holds the number K of the step which was completed immediately before stopping, and when receiving a retry instruction after that, sequentially executes the ERP from the K+1-th error recovery step.
