Abstract: A valve for redirecting fluid flow has a valve chamber (16) supporting fluid flow, with the valve chamber having an inlet (25), a first outlet (26), and a second outlet (28). The valve chamber (16) can be closed or partially open. A flap element (24) is movable to alternatively block the first outlet (26) and the second outlet (28). In or immediately adjacent to the valve chamber (16) are opposing first and a second catch mechanisms (34,36) for controllably latching the flap element to block respectively the first outlet and the second outlet. The first and second catch mechanisms (34,36) have a disabled state and an activated state for holding and allowing release of the flap element (24). Once the first or second catch mechanism is disabled, the flap element (24) is free to move to another position, provided it can overcome the mechanical fluid flow forces that tend to hold it in position. To counter and utilize such forces for moving the flap element, an impulse mechanism kicks the flap element into the valve chamber, away from one of the first and second catch mechanisms, after one of the first and second catch mechanisms is controllably brought into the disabled state. Since the flap element is unstable, oscillations of the flap element in the fluid flow will eventually bring the flap element into catchment range of one of the first and second catch mechanisms in an activated state.

Abstract: The display system includes a light source (350) and a display surface. A two dimensional light modulator array (342) is arranged in the optical path between the light source and the display surface. The light modulator array includes several light modulators arranged in rows to modulate light from the light source. A redundant light modulator array (385) having several light modulators arranged in rows modulates the light from the light source. A mirror (370) is positioned to selectively direct light incident on the redundant array towards the display surface to substitute for a failed row of light modulators in the two dimensional array.

Marking material (28), such as ink, toner, etc., is controllably introduced into the propellant stream (A) and imparted with sufficient kinetic energy thereby to be made incident upon the substrate (38). A multiplicity of channels for directing the propellant and marking material allow for high throughput, high resolution marking. Multiple marking materials (28C, 28M, 28Y, 28K) may be introduced into the channel (34) and mixed therein prior to being made incident on the substrate (38), or mixed or superimposed on the substrate (38) without re-registration. One example is a single-pass, full-color printer.

Abstract: An object tracking and motion control system includes a thermal marking unit such as a laser for inducing localized thermal indicia on objects. A thermal tracking unit, typically a micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) such as a two dimensional thermal sensing array, is positioned to measure movement of objects marked with localized thermal indicia. A motion control unit is connected to the thermal tracking unit to permit adjustment of motion of objects marked with induced localized thermal indicia based on their measured movement.

Abstract: A fluid transport system for moving flexible objects includes a conveyor configured to direct fluid flow against opposite sides of flexible objects. A sensor unit senses motion state of flexible objects, and a motion analysis unit is connected to the sensor unit to calculate relative or absolute movement of flexible objects based on the motion state. Overall movement, position, velocity, and orientation of flexible objects can be determined, as well as internal movement of the object attributable to flexure or edge curling. A motion control unit is connected to the motion analysis unit to modify fluid flow directed against opposite sides of flexible objects, accurately adjusting motion of flexible objects.
