Abstract: The present invention relates to a vertical cavity surface emitting laser with an accurately defined and controlled aperture (134) which directs the current path within the laser. Specifically, the oxide regions (106) surrounding the aperture are formed by a pre-oxidation layer disordering process which controls the regions within which oxidation can occur. The present invention allows for the manufacture of highly compact lasers with reproducible optical and electrical characteristics.

Abstract: A print head (24) is disclosed for use in a marking apparatus in which a propellant stream (A) is passed through a channel (34) and directed toward a substrate (38). Marking material (28), such as ink, toner, etc., is controllably introduced into the propellant stream (A) and imparted with sufficient kinetic energy thereby to be made incident upon the substrate (38). A multiplicity of channels for directing the propellant and marking material allow for high throughput, high resolution marking. Multiple marking materials (28C, 28M, 28Y, 28K) may be introduced into the channel (34) and mixed therein prior to being made incident on the substrate (38), or mixed or superimposed on the substrate (38) without re-registration. One example is a single-pass, full-color printer.

Marking material, such as ink, toner, etc., is controllably introduced into the propellant stream and imparted with sufficient kinetic energy thereby to be made incident upon a substrate. At sufficient velocity, and with appropriate marking material, the marking material may be kinetically fused to the substrate. A multiplicity of channels for directing the propellant and marking material allow for high throughput, high resolution marking. Multiple marking materials may be introduced into the channel and mixed therein prior to being made incident on the substrate, or mixed or superimposed on the substrate without re-registration. One example is a single-pass, full-color printer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure of a monolithic edge light-emitting laser which emits light ranging in wavelength from 390 to 430 nm (blue range) and is capable of addressing independently. SOLUTION: In a laser structure 200 with exclusively of gallium nitride as the principal body, a laser heterostructure is formed on the terminal 216 of an n-GaN layer 210. Laser is emitted from a quantum well active layer. The n-GaN layer 210 is epitaxially grown laterally and is a region with few crystal defects. This allows a blue laser of high efficiency to be emitted.
