Abstract: Parallel flow reaction systems comprising four or more reaction channels are disclosed. Distribution systems, and parallel flow reaction systems comprising such distribution systems are also disclosed. Specifically, the distribution systems comprise a feed-composition subsystem for providing a different feed composition to each of the four or more reactors. In preferred embodiments, the feed composition subsystem comprises at least one set of four or more feed-component flow restrictors, each of the four or more feed-component flow restrictors having a flow resistance that varies relative to other flow restrictors in the set.

Abstract: A modular materials characterization apparatus includes a sensor array (10) disposed on a substrate (16), with a standardized array and contact pad (14) format; electronic test and measurement apparatus (54) for sending electrical signals to and receiving electrical signals from the sensor array (10); an apparatus for making electrical contact (50) to the sensors in the standardized array format; an apparatus for routing signals (129) between one or more selected sensors and the electronic test and measurement apparatus and a computer (52) with a computer program recorded therein for controlling the operation of the apparatus. The sensor array (10) is preferably arranged in a standardized format used in combinatorial chemistry applications for rapid deposition of sample materials on the sensor array. An interconnection apparatus (40) and sensor array (10) and contact pad (32) allow measurement of many different material properties by using substrates carrying different sensor types.

Abstract: A method and system for researching and developing and/or optimizing new catalysts and products in a combinatorial manner is disclosed. The method begins with starting components or a ligand library and provides methods of creating catalyst or product libraries, which are then tested in a reaction of interest. The system uses methods of robotic handling for moving libraries from station to station. The method and apparatus are especially useful for synthesizing, screening, and characterizing combinatorial catalyst libraries, but also offer significant advantages over conventional experimental methods as well.

Abstract: A method for characterizing a polymer sample that includes the steps of withdrawing a polymer sample from a sample container into an injection probe of an auto- sampler where the probe is heated to maintain the withdrawn sample at a temperature of not less than about 75 degrees Celsius while resident in the probe. The heated injection probe resides in a first environment maintained at about ambient temperature while withdrawing the polymer sample. The method further includes loading at least a portion of the withdrawn sample into an injection port or a loading port of a liquid chromatography system where the injection port or loading port is adaptable for fluid communication with a chromatographic column. The chromatographic column resides in a heated second environment maintained at a temperature of not less than about 75 degrees Celsius. The loaded sample is injected into a mobile phase of the liquid chromatography system. The sample is maintained at a temperature but not les s than about 75 degrees Celsius during a period of time including from when the sample is withdrawn from the sample container to when the sample is within the heated second environment. The injected sample is chromatographically separated and a property of the sample or a composition thereof is detected.

Abstract: Method for preparing a mixed powder sample by mixing two or more different powders comprising transferring a quantity of a first powder to a mixing vessel and transferring a quantity of a second powder to the mixing vessel to form a powder bed in the mixing vessel comprising the first and second powders. The quantities of the powders are selected so the mixed sample has a predetermined ratio of first powder to second powder. The powder bed is fluidized to mix the powders and produce a mixed sample. The mixed sample weighs about 5 grams or less. The invention also includes apparatus for preparing mixed powder samples by mixing two or more different powders.
