    Abstract: A dry, intimate mixture of ammonium ion-containing catalyst precursors is heated at a rate of up to 10 degrees C/min to decomposition in the range 240-360 degrees C. It is held in this range until 90 mol% or more of ammonia released above 160 degrees C has been evolved. At no higher than 230 degrees C, the molecular oxygen content of the atmosphere A where the thermal treatment takes place is reduced to at most 0.5 vol%. This lower oxygen content is maintained until the total ammonia released reaches 20 mol%. A dry, intimate mixture of ammonium ion-containing catalyst precursors is heated at a rate of up to 10 degrees C/min to decomposition in the range 240-360 degrees C. It is held in this range until 90 mol% or more of ammonia released above 160 degrees C has been evolved. At no higher than 230 degrees C, the molecular oxygen content of the atmosphere A where the thermal treatment takes place is reduced to at most 0.5 vol%. This lower oxygen content is maintained until the total ammonia released reaches 20 mol%. At the earliest when more than 70 mol% of the ammonia has been released, the mixture is heated above the decomposition temperature range, at 10 degrees C/min, to reach the calcining temperature range of 380-450 degrees C. At the latest, when 98 mol% of the total ammonia has been released during the entire course of thermal treatment, the molecular oxygen content of the atmosphere A is raised to above 0.5 vol%-4.0 vol%. The intimate dry mixtures is then calcined in the calcination temperature range, under the increased oxygen content.
