Abstract: A method for driving a photo-sensor to produce an improved, stable output which exactly represents the incident light is disclosed. The photo-sensor has a pair of main electrodes found on a semiconductor layer with a photo-sensing area arranged therebetween. A semiconductor layer and an auxiliary electrode are formed on at least the photo-sensing area with an insulating area being interleaved therein. The auxiliary electrode is used for stabilizing the photosensing output and providing a signal proportional to the incident light. The method of driving such a photo-sensor includes applying a bias voltage to the auxiliary electrode in accordance with the carriers carrying a current of the semiconductor layer. A voltage of the same polarity as that of the bias voltage, but smaller in absolute value, is applied to the auxiliary electrode for a predetermine period of time in a non-read period of the photo-sensor to cause a next photo-sensor output to be read while a previous photo-sensor has been erased.

The invention relates, furthermore, to liquid crystal display devices in which electrode substrates are contained which have been treated in this way.

Abstract: A display apparatus comprises a first substrate provided with a thin film transistor array as a driving switching element and a second substrate provided with another electrode, and produces a display by electro-optical change generated between these substrates. Visibility of the display is improved in such a way that rays of light incident on the display apparatus are converted into diffusion light. Photoconductive material, in particular amorphous silicon, can be used by covering a semiconductive portions of the thin film transistor array of the display apparatus with an intercepting member. In a display apparatus using a thin film transistor array as a driving switching element, a conductive surface electrically insulated from gate lines on a substrate on which the gate lines for the thin film transistor array are formed, such conductive surface acts as a counter electrode of capacitors for storing charge. Therefore the counter electrode of capacitors is separately formed from gate lines, and writing driving voltage can be set without taking effects of voltage change of gate lines into consideration. Shading layers comprising a plurality of color filters also cover each of the thin film transistors.

SOLUTION: Electron emission columns 53 and atmosphere resistant spacers 7 are alternately arranged, and a surface conductive electron emission element is used as an electron emission element 52. An electron beam emitted from the electron emission element 52 has a Z-directional component due to an accelerating voltage applied mainly between a back plate and a face plate, and is deflected to the electrode side of a positive electrode element to have a +X- directional or -X-directional velocity component. The electron beam finally collides to a phosphor, namely irradiated member on the inner surface of the face plate, to emit light, and forms an image. At this time, the orbit of the electron beam flying at the accelerating voltage is not disturbed by the atmosphere resistant spacers 7, and therefore, the electron beam finally collides to the phosphor similarly to the case of no atmosphere resistant spacers 7.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an electron emission element, where the island structure of superfine particles is controlled by the orientation property peculiar to an organic film so as to suppress the dispersion between elements, by arranging an organic film layer containing superfine particles between a pair of electrodes. CONSTITUTION:On an insulating substrate 4, an organic film layer 1 of both mediaphilic properties, which shows peculiar self composition by the mutual action of hydrophobic and hydrophilic radicals containing superfine particles such as ribosome 202 where, for example, conductive superfine particles 201 are sealed, is arranged between element electrodes 2 and 3. For the ribosome, the size and the retention efficiency into inner water phase of sealed matter can be controlled to some degree by making method, so the dispersion between elements can be controlled by controlling the island structure of the superfine particles. After current application treatment with the voltage applied between the electrodes 2 and 3, the substrate 4 and an insulating substrate 13, where a phosphor layer 11 and a transparent electrode 12 are arranged, are confronted with each other across a sealing member 14, and the space 15 is decompressed for sealing.
