Abstract: A tobacco flavor unit is provided for use in a smoking article for delivering to a smoker a tobacco flavor substance, the smoking article having electrical heating means disposed in a cavity. The tobacco flavor unit includes a carbon fibrous mat and tobacco flavor medium disposed on the mat for providing for the efficient generation of tobacco flavor substance. The carbon mat includes carbon fibers that are made from a precursor selected from the group consisting of rayon, pitch and polyacrylonitrile. A smoking article incorporating the tobacco flavor unit is also provided.

Abstract: Reconstituted tobacco sheets manufactured from tobacco dust and binder are described herein. More particularly, the tobacco dust has a mean particle size in the range of from about 60 mesh to about 400 mesh to afford reconstituted tobacco sheets having about 80% to about 90% tobacco content with improved quality and survivability. The reduced particle size of the tobacco dust allows an increase in the solids content of the slurry without an increase in slurry viscosity. The increased solids content reduces the drying load of the cast sheet thereby allowing an increased production rate. The reconstituted tobacco sheets may be prepared from a slurry comprising tobacco dust and binder that may be subjected to a means for removing air trapped within the slurry before casting the slurry into sheets. An apparatus for determining the amount of air trapped within the slurry prepared according to the process of the present invention is also described herein.

Abstract: Disclosed is an aerosol generator for an electronic cigarette that can vary the composition of the volatile liquid. The aerosol generator comprises a composite conduit 1, 2, 3 to transport multiple liquids 5, 6 to a heating element 7 at flow rates such that the liquids 5, 6 arrive at the heating element 7 in desirable concentrations, the composite conduit 1, 2, 3 comprising a plurality of passages having different lengths. The heating element 7 is operable to volatilize the multiple liquids 5, 6 to form volatilized fluid, which mixes with ambient air to form an aerosol with desirable concentrations of the multiple liquids 5, 6. The composition of the aerosol is determined by the rates of transport of the multiple liquids by the composite conduit to the heating element. The multiple liquids comprise a combination of hydrophobic, hydrophilic and neutral liquids and in which the generator comprises a first wick is of a material having an affinity to the hydrophilic liquid; a second wick is of a material having an affinity to the hydrophobic liquid; a third wick is of a material having an affinity to the neutral liquid.

Abstract: A cigarette (23) comprises a tobacco rod having filled and unfilled portions arranged so that electrical heater elements (31) may overlap both portions. The rod includes a tubular tobacco web. The web is constructed by converting tobacco feedstock into a continuous sheet of tobacco web and converting the continuous sheet of tobacco web into one or ore bobbins of tobacco web suitable for automated manufacture of cigarettes. A heater (25) comprises a supporting hub and electrically resistive heater blades (37) defining a receptacle (27) for an inserted cigarette (23). Each blade comprises first and second heater blade legs each having a first end and a second end, and a connecting section connecting the second end of the first leg and the first end of the second leg. The blades (37) are heated by a resistive heating circuit and heat the inserted cigarette (23). The legs are separated by a gap to permit entrainment of flavour substances upon drawing.

Abstract: The method of manufacturing a cigarette involves forming a tobacco rod by placing 2-up tobacco plugs an 2-up hollow plugs ina spaced alternating relationship. The rod is severed between two of the tobacco plugs. 2-up filter plugs are positioned between the tobacco rods. Tipping paper is then wrapped around the plug and tobacco portions. Tobacco web and overwrap are wrapped by directing a ribbon of tobacco mat and a ribbon of overwrap together about a succession of tobacco rods. The overwrap is wrapped around the tobacco mat. An anchoring bead of adhesive is applied along the web.
