    Abstract: A method and apparatus for coordinating the time at which a mobile station (5) performs searches for alternative systems to which a hard handoff will occur. In one system which includes the present invention, the mobile station (5) receives a command which instructs the mobile station (5) as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indications of the presence of an alternative system. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both an origination base station (10) and a mobile station (5). The mobile station (5) tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station (5) coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station (5) when the mobile station (5) is tuned to the origination frequency.

    Abstract: A forward link power control mechanism in a remote station (6) measures reverse link power control bits which are transmitted by one or more base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) on a forward traffic channel (10a). At the remote station (6) the reverse link power control bits from multiple base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) or multiple signal paths are measured, combined, and filtered to yield an improved measurement of the forward link signal quality. The reverse link (12a, 12b) power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in the power control loop. The remote station (6) generates a set of forward link power control bits in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) in communication with the remote station (6). Each base station (4a, 4b, 4n) adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel (10a) in accordance to its measurement of the forward link power control bit. The gains of the forward traffic channels (10a) of the base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) are corrected periodically so that erroneous reception of the forward link power control bits by the base stations do not accumulate.

    Abstract: A dynamic shared forward link channel (or “data” channel) is used to send multicast data to a group of wireless devices, e.g., using a common long code mask for the data channel. Reference power control (PC) bits are also sent on the data channel and used for signal quality estimation. A shared forward link control channel is used to send user-specific signaling to individual wireless devices, e.g., using time division multiplexing (TDM) and a unique long code mask for each wireless device. A shared forward link indicator channel is used to send reverse link (RL) PC bits to the wireless devices, e.g., using TDM. The data channel is jointly power controlled by all wireless devices receiving the data channel. The control and indicator channels are individually power controlled by each wireless device such that the signaling and RL PC bits sent on these channels for the wireless device are reliably received.
