    Abstract: In a high data rate communication system, a method and apparatus for improved throughput while transmitting data packets within multiple time slots. In order to avoid unnecessary retransmissions of a packet, a subscriber station sends a Stop-Repeat signal to a base station, causing the base station to cease further transmissions of the packet. In order to enable successful decoding of a packet, a subscriber station sends a Continue-Repeat signal to a base station, causing the base station to send retransmissions of the packet during time slots beyond a predetermined default number of time slots.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for estimating maximum rate of data and for estimating a transmission power required for transmission of a data with a rate of data in a communication system are disclosed. A terminal determines a quality metric of a communication link, over which data are to be transmitted, and modifies the determined quality metric by a quality metric margin. The terminal then estimates the maximum rate of data in accordance with the modified quality metric. Alternatively, the terminal then estimates transmission power required for transmission of a data with a rate of data in accordance with the rate of data and the modified quality metric. The quality metric margin may be pre-determined or dynamically adjusted. The terminal dynamically adjusts the quality metric margin in accordance with a result of comparison of a transmit power corresponding to the estimated maximum rate of data with an actual transmit power used to transmit the data.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus to compute the combiner coefficients for wireless communication systems for a space-time solution. One embodiment trains the weights on a signal known a priori that is time multiplexed with other signals, such as a pilot signal in a High Data Rate, HDR, system, wherein the signal is transmitted at full power. A Minimizing Mean Square Error, MMSE, approach is applied allowing weight combining on a per path basis. The weights are calculated as a function of a noise correlation matrix and spatial signature per path. The noise correlation matrix is determined from an autocorrelation matrix of the received signal. In one embodiment, the MMSE approach is applied to a non-time gated pilot signal.

    Abstract: Techniques to adjust the setpoint of a power control loop in a wireless communication system. The setpoint may be adjusted based on frame status indicative of erased/good decoded frames, one or more (typically soft) metrics indicative of the confidence in the decoded results, power surplus/deficit indicative of the difference between the received signal quality and the setpoint and a threshold Eb/Nt needed for the desired level of performance, or a combination thereof. The metrics include one of a re-encoded power metric and a modified Yamamoto metric. The setpoint may be adjusted in different manners and/or by different amounts depending on the above-noted factors. The techniques may be employed for forward and/or reverse links in CDMA systems.
