Abstract: An optical scanner such as a bar code scanner includes a segmented mirror (14), the individual sections of which have different profiles (16,18,20). By directing the scanning laser beam across the mirror, a plurality of scan lines are created, at different distances from the scanner. This provides increased flexibility by extending the scanner's working range. In alternative embodiments, a collector mirror and/or a scanning mirror may be segmented. In addition, beam shaping may be provided by reflecting the beam from one or more aplanar surfaces.

Abstract: A system and method for synchronizing internal clocks of receiving stations of a locating system are described. A beacon transmits reference data packets a t a known position. A first arrival time is compared to a second arrival time to determine a correlated arrival time data. The first arrival time is a time o f reception of the reference data packets by a first receiving station, and th e second arrival time is a time of reception of the reference data packets by a second receiving station. A linear polynomial fit is computed as a function of the correlated arrival time data and the first and second arrival times. Tim es of arrival of data packets at the first and second receiving stations is synchronized as a function of the linear polynomial fit.

Abstract: A dual mode mobile unit is arranged to communicate in either a first or second data communications standard, such as combined Bluetooth and 802.11 operation. An interface unit converts received Bluetooth or 802.11 format signals into 802.11 frame format data signals to be provided to a digital signal processor which is programmed to process signals in either standard. The dual mode mobile unit can operate in the 802.11 standard to reserve a time interval for Bluetooth activity during which other 802.11 units will avoid transmissions to avoid interference.

Abstract: An optical scan module, for example for an optical scanner, includes an integrally molded plastics material member which defines not only the laser focusing lens, but also the laser focusing aperture and the collection mirror. In addition, the molded member may act to house and to locate both a semiconductor laser and a photodetector, thereby ensuring easy and accurate placement of those elements within the scanning assembly. The optical assembly may be in modular form, mounted onto a common printed circuit board with a beam scanner.

Abstract: 26 A multi-bit digitizer (30) for a barcode reader detects the presence of edges of a scanned barcode symbol, and also measures the strength of each detected edge. A polarity or edge direction signal (8) indicates the direction of each detected edge, and a timing signal (6) is representative of the timing and also, by means of a variable pulse width, the strength of each edge. A gating signal (200) indicates that the data are unreliable and invalid if the measured voltage applied to the scanner motor of the barcode reader is higher or lower than defined limit values. Any scans made at a speed which were too high or too low are rejected.

Abstract: A system and method is provided for locating objects using RFID tags. The system and method uses an RFID reader and a distance calculator to efficiently and accurately determine the location of objects that include an RFID tag. The RFID reader transmits a plurality of signals to the RFID tag, with the plurality of signals having different fundamental frequencies. In response, the RFID tag backscatter modulates the plurality of transmitted signals to create a plurality of backscatter-modulated signals. The RFID reader receives and demodulates the plurality of backscatter-modulated signals. The distance calculator determines the phase of the plurality of backscatter-modulated signals and determines a rate of change of the phase in the backscatter-modulated signals with respect to the rate of change in the fundamental frequency of the transmitted signals and uses this information to calculate the distance to the RFID tag.
